I was under the impression that Sephora cast members don't work on commission at all. So whether you bought $125 or not she wouldn't have had a cut in it (unlike how at Nordstrom your items are individually stickered/noted that so and so helped you or at a counter in a department store).

You like those items anyway right? I would be bummed to see items be damaged out because of the return only for me to repurchase the same stuff online - but that's just me!

I always keep in mind that the one on ones with an advisor, whether scheduled or not, are there to advise you on what else is out there. Seeing that you had already owned all the Tarte made her push other lines since Tartes already been covered. Given that they are sales people in a store, I think of those conversations as always being part of a pitch/sale since that's their job, yanno? SAs in many stores looove to compliment me on my glasses, ask about my lipstick and of course it goes to "oh we have XYZ that you'll love!" I do get wrapped up and sometimes think of SAs as my BFFs (and probably would too if I was having a blast with a makeover) but at the end of the day, we are consumers and they are sales people. But it is crappy that she made you feel like that -- that is definitely a no!

I don't think they would have to, they are still wrapped in red tissue in the bag!  I haven't touched them - I clarified with them before that if something is unopened they don't have to damage it out (after another employee said they did).  But you do bring up a good point - what if they do??  Thank you, I hadn't thought of that.

I can't remember what I bought actually.  That happens to me when my anxiety takes over.  The receipt was emailed to me so I'll go look it up.  The hourglass ambient palette and anastasia brow item were two...i'm at a loss as to the other ones...Yes I do like them.  But I also have Tarte's brow product that I love, and Tarte's setting powder.

But you know, you are on point, at the end of the day me having 'issues' of various dimensions (ignorance being one of them) shouldn't be turned back to someone else.  Thanks.  I feel a lot better.   :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

@ They don't work on commission, but all retail stores expect anyone working the sales floor to hit goals, and she probably got "credit" for any sales she made, even though it didn't directly affect her paycheck. ETA: I should learn to read, because I think you hit the nail on the head in regards to why she was pushing other products. Seriously, I didn't get past the first line, my bad. -_- /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

@ Just return them, don't feel bad. I am a pushover and get talked into things I don't want all the time. I just returned about $200 worth of product to Sephora and they didn't even bat an eye. Also, I'd recommend carrying come of your anxiety meds with you so that you can take them when you start to feel badly. I look like a pill popping lunatic sometimes, but it is better than being a crying, hyperventilating mess, so everyone else can get over it. ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

@@Shalott lolz. I wrote something then I saw your ETA.

Last I checked (and this is common across retail in my experience) if the store hits their sales goal then everyone gets some sort of bonus. So I guess if one is concerned about sales, etc. that's another thing to keep in mind.

Oh, and the other thing is I'll likely see her again because of the classes I'm signed up for.  They all rotate giving the classes in the Bay Area.  And look, I really like her and I know she was doing her job, but I just feel kind of suckered.  I don't know...I'll stop rambling now.
I would return them. She shouldn't have told you she will be teaching you to use your Tarte products if she wasn't going to teach you to use your Tarte products. Plus, ebates money is hard earned money. Honestly if she was so concerned about getting credit she should have asked a manager if she could just give you 8% off so you'd shop in the store.

If you're worried about her keeping her credit, just return to another store without a receipt. Say the items were a gift. They will give you store credit but you shop at sephora enough to use the store credit.

I hope u had fun with the beauty advisor! Tell us everything!

I work at a SiJCP in NY. So you are definitely far from me, but if u ever come to NY let me know! :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

That's strange, see at my store we send flyers out, that say something like "free bag for promotional time with a mini make over", so it's an incentive to promote mini make overs, and you get your bag, no purchase necessary. I think we all got our cables crossed because Sephora has their cables crossed :/
I totally agree. I don't fault the stores at all, but this is why if I get instructions from the website- i.e. a promotional email, or a CS email telling me to take a point perk back to the store to get my points- I always print it out and/or have it ready to show on my iPad, just to make it easier for SAs.

@ I agree with everyone else, there's no reason she should have told you you would work with your Tarte products if you weren't- I understand how these makeovers and classes work, that in the end it's all about the hard sell, but she should have clarified that in your correspondence instead of saying "yeah, sure!" and then bringing out new products. There's no reason why she couldn't have shown you how to use the Tarte products and then said "If you like this Tarte product, you'll love this ____ from X Brand!" But this is why I don't go for the makeovers at all- ever. All of this being said, please don't try to stress about this too much- as someone who has anxiety too, I know it's easier said than done- but there's no reason for you to hold onto products you really didn't want or need if you don't want them and felt pressured, as I think most of us have at one point or the other.

One more thing, and I think this will really help you! Search around- this forum, Google, etc.- for favorite YouTube makeup gurus- there are some AMAZING gurus out there who make step-by-step videos for every makeup question you could ever have, and they're really easy to follow. Or, just YouTube search what you need help with- ex "daytime makeup to nighttime makeup," "natural eye look," and even "gorgeous eyes with Tarte eye shadow" or whatever. I know so many girls who weren't makeup obsessed like I wss growing up, reading every issue of Allure- and they all say these videos have basically taught them from scratch how to use makeup. And IME, they're more helpful than in-store makeovers.

You could also hire an independent makeup artist for a one-on-one consultation. You would be paying for the appointment so there would be no pressure to buy, and they could tell you everything you needed to know about using your Tarte products :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Totally agree with the above. YouTube is amazing when I have something but i can't figure out how to use it. Put the product name in the search bar along with tutorial and you'll get a bunch of results. Same concept as going into a store but no sales push, and then practice until you get it right!

At our store, we damage out any returns (or sometimes we can make them into testers) but they don't ever go back on the shelf. However, that's not your problem.. We don't work on commission and I'm sorry you felt so pressured. I hate that! I get panicky too.
As a makeup buddy, I would take everything out of your bag and look at them/research on Sephora's website. I'd be terribly disappointed she didn't help you more with the Tarte like you had discussed :( /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> that being said, the consultations are a great way to introduce new products as well. I love my ambient palette (which I had to buy full price online, we only get a discount at The JCP locations and ours don't have Hourglass). I love Anastasia. I also love options as my collection clearly shows and it sounds like yours does too.. Haha. Keep what you want, return the rest. :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Okay, this is not Sephora specific but I worked in retail for so long, and one thing that I think happens, is that we as an employee find something we think is just amazing and awesome and we want all of our customers to think so, too. So we show them and maybe it comes across as pushing but it is really just excitement. And some people buy our suggestion, and some don't and I think most sales people know that is okay, but some seriously can't take the hint.

Just putting it out there - if this associate was so pushy that she offended you as a customer, she probably irritates her coworkers just as bad. @ I still think you should return what you don't want. Just take it to a different associate and explain what happened, that you felt pressure to buy what you didn't need. I really, really think it will be okay!

You ladies have all been so great - I feel terrible but in the end, I repurchased half of my in-store purchase at 11:59pm (seriously, I need to get a life!) and decided I'll split it with her.   And, I do want to say she was fabulous in her instructions, and even at 3am when I was taking off my make up for bed - my face was fairly flawless.

I get taken advantage of (a lot) mostly because I just take everything at face value - and believe exactly what I think is happening, IS happening.  That isn't her fault.  Sometimes it is hard to be me because I get kind of stuck in a cycle...anyway WAY more info than anyone ever wants to know LOL!

I overslept and missed her class this morning that I was thinking of attending - but didn't confirm.  I have one scheduled for tonight at 7pm in San Francisco - just not sure I'm up for the drive.  But if I go I'll leave my credit card at home!!

And now that I am more aware of the role of a BA, I'll know better next time.  I was thinking too - she had no idea that inside my brain I was having this whacked out conversation, so I am in the process of emailing her to tell her about the 1/2 return - I'd hate for one of her colleagues to tell her I'm saying bad things when none of this is towards her...I need to own my ignorance.

Plus, I was thinking of all my issues with Sephora since I started shopping there in May this year.  It really does boggle the mind how they can consistently do negative things (talking about other rants now - like with sample giving, calling me a liar, etc.) and so after my order last night I took the offered survey.  And I didn't say anything negative about my BA appt (by then I pulled my head out of my @$$), but I was very specific with people who have been rude, what locations and dates and times, and names if I had them.

I told them I know they don't need me as a customer, but I love the store so much why can't they work on their customer service?  I asked them if their employees are not willing to give out the samples that they get to give, where do they go?  I'm just curious because I have learned they get several 'testers' of items too, in addition to samples, and I'm starting to think that on these boards when we comment 'it's not like we are taking the samples from them...' that actually, yeah we are!  I mean how else can that behavior be explained?  AND I found out that employees also get bags of free stuff from brands all the time - to test out at home!  OMG do I want to work there!!  LOL!! But anyway, people are funny, and people have quirks, but they don't have to be so damn rude!

Again - thank you all for your support, everyone is always so nice and I appreciate all comments, after all, I can't think of everything!!  Can you imagine how long that would take to process!!!  AGH!!!

Now...on to more fun things...has anyone taken a beauty class at Sephora?  They are held off hours (before or after store is open) and cover specific topics.  Today's is Flawless Foundation, and I really want to go just kind of dreading the drive to the Bay Area (2-3 hour drive, depending on traffic).  Just wondered if it is worth it.  My BA yesterday said they are constantly training and taking classes to be able to do what they do, and you saw her makeup...certainly flawless!

And I did buy another makeup bag last night.  Because the 7 sitting in my 'extra makeup bag bin' aren't enough.

IS THERE A DOCTOR IN THE HOUSE?? LOL!!

I am a terrible internet surfer and you tube searcher.  I can spend hours searching for something and not finding what I am looking for.  Is there particular how-to 'channels' that I can look for? Like how to make your foundation not age you 10 years by settling into wrinkles??

Just got an email for a new(?) lip set with:

0.03 oz Urban Decay Mini Naked Revolution Lipstick

0.12 oz Nars Deluxe Orgasm Lip Gloss

0.07 oz Buxom Mini Full On Lip Cream in White Russian

0.02 oz Marc Jacobs Mini Lust for Lacquer in Kissability

0.05 oz Deluxe Bite High Pigment Lip Pencil in Meritage

0.20 oz Full-size Smashbox Be Legendary Gloss in Pout

http://www.sephora.com/give-me-some-lip-P388033?skuId=1634898

I really wish Sephora would do sets with more vampy colours, I'm so tired of all the pale pinks/nudes with an occasional red. And that Smashbox gloss in Pout needs to go away - I swear I've had 2 or 3 of them already from sets (that I ended up giving to paler friends with less pigmented lips).

I'm probably in the minority here, but I sort of feel bad for this poor girl (the SA) who has her picture posted up here now.

Anyway, I think that if anyone purchases anything they do not need or want then they should never feel bad about returning it.  I've made pressure purchases before as well so I know the feeling it leaves you with.  I typically just take it back or put it in the gift pile.

Yes!  This!  That gloss is a horrid color!  lol  Mine had hardly any pink tint to it and looked more white than anything.  I wish they'd throw a plum colored Buxom in one instead of Dolly and White Russian all the time.  Same for Nars.

I totally didn't think about that...I'll take it down!!
