agreed. i would 100x rather spend the time to swatch things for myself..then chase around an SA to give me a little sample cuppy so i can see what it looks like outside :p

OK so how accurate is the skin id thing? I went into the finder online and put in my normal foundation that is perfect for me, and every other color I look at online that they suggest for my color id seems way too dark.

I actually find it works pretty well.  But I got my match from being profiled in the store, rather than on-line.  I took home samples of 2 of the foundations I was matched with, and was staggered at how seamlessly they blend in.  If I had just been picking colors based on what I see on-screen, I would have assumed what they matched me with was way too dark.

Since I know my "base" match is accurate, I use those numbers to gauge how well other things will work.  I matched to a 4Y04.  I've used foundations that are labeled 3Y03 and 5Y05 without them seeming "off."  So I know I can pretty confidently use anything in those parameters.  Haven't tried going more than 1 level lighter/darker or more/less yellow, though.

yup. this was my same experience. i think its fun to check out in store if its a slow day and the SAs want to play with you.

@tweakabell do you go to the Arden Fair store? I wonder if Lori is still there. She was my make up fairy godmother in high school and would do my make up for prom, senior photos, etc. she would also give me full sizes of a ton of stuff... I definitely did not understand or appreciate all the things she gave me back then but DAMN did I look good when I really needed to. the woman is a saint and was a regulat ar my starbucks in midtown. she would drop off bags of samples and i would be like "lololol any black eyeliner in there cuz thats all i know how to use"

No I rarely go into Sephora unless it's a SinJCP exclusive since I'm not even 5 mins from Sunrise mall and there's a woman there who is super sweet. I usually order online, I find most free standing Sephoras ignore me since I usually look like crap when I have the urge to browse.

I wonder what the problem is?  If you got matched in the store and that foundation was right, you should have a good jumping-off place.  But maybe the match was bad.  Or maybe most foundations just aren't coded right?

I guess I got lucky and got an SA who knew what she was doing with the colorimeter and matched me properly, but everything I've bought subsequently is the right color.  Without a lot of time to spend in-store, swatching and sampling can be a challenge for me, so I'm glad that it seems to work for me.

I think some of the foundations are coded wrong the nars suggestion seems correct but the sephora one theres no way it will match me.

That may explain it.  I got the NARS foundation I was matched to.  I later picked up 2 different UD foundations (even though neither was the same number as me) and a NARS tinted moisturizer, and those all work pretty well.  I wonder which brands have the best "matching."

So true! Anytime I've ever asked an SA for help I get matched around 3 shades darker than I need, very obvious once I'm outside. I think it may have to do with my skin texture + tone? People always assume I'm darker and warmer than I am (olive toned but pale so I think the golden tone is just not associated with light?). I'm an exact match for MUFE 117 (b/w NC15-20) and have been told I was definitely a 130

Shortcut if you want to test more than 1: swatch a foundation you know you match well and blend half in slightly and the other just don't touch. Then find the foundation you're curious about and do the same next to it. I've saved myself a lot of time by easily comparing that way - makes it very obvious with tone differences. Then you can narrow down a sample! I've had SAs look at my arm with 3-4 swatches asking me if I need help. Nope I'm doing great

That reminds me, has anyone noticed any new SiJCP exclusive sets?? I'm itching for a new set.... Or a new priced sephora favorites set.. Looove those!

Color match was off for me by 1 shade, aolthough it did narrow it down.

i read that the MUFE numbers don't necessary increase in terms of darkness but more with the undertone. so anything ending with 7 is a yellow, 8 is a beige, etc. i've been told i'm a 127 but also a 140 -- 127 being medium with yellow 140 medium with dark yellow undertones. although, to your point -- i've definitely been told 2 different undertone families (beige and yellow) so the difference in numbers sounded totally crazy!

Yep totally right! 130 is warmer and darker so it surprised me because it was wrong in both shade and tone lol. I used the sample as a bronzer! A lot of foundations do that and it can get confusing, off the top of my head Armani (ex: 4.0 and 4.5, tone) and Chanel (b10 & br12) both have a signifier of tone, not necessarily light/dark. Despite the confusion I'm just so happy so many companies are starting to get that darker women aren't all warm and the lighter the more pink they are. Progress!

Hi ladies. I usually lurk or stay away when I'm trying to be good. But I wanted to jump in on the color match convo. My daughter and I went in for a color match and were matched the same id. Well she's darker than I am so she went up a shade and I ordered the one the color march said was for both of us. It was so wrong. I went back and was given a lighter shade and it's perfect. I don't have the id for this new shade. Is there a way to get it? Eta. Nm I found it. :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I also got a NARS foundation from my match.  I was matched to the shade Fiji in NARS sheer matte formula.  I wanted something dewier than matte, so I got the shade Fiji in the Sheer Glow formulation which was a perfect match.  Confusingly, the NARS colors in different formulations are both labeled the same (Fiji) but don't match to the same shade if you look them up online????  What the heck?! I was happy because it worked out ok, but I definitely wouldn't purchase a new foundation without trying it on just simply based on their shade recommendations.  Also, there were very very few matches for my shade (between 6-8) which I found disappointing.
