I don't know how much it has changed over the decades, but the makeup that geisha's used to wear was basically like a poison (it contained a lot of lead to get that look) and it destroyed immune systems and skin over the years. I'm sure it's better now, but still, skin needs to breathe to be healthy. (Not that it wasn't amazing to watch... it was : ) )

Ah, well the thing is, the numbers of little lines signify what level of Geisha she is. Once Gesha have been doing it for a long time alot of them discontinue the makeup.
