This is the same store I go to all the time, I've taken products back that are a year old and have gotten the money back in original form of payment. And the two items I got my money back on were one from December and one from March! I've never had problems before. Again,  I've always been told that in-store, as long as you have receipt, you get your original form of credit back.

And again, she couldn't give me a reason why. She seemed confused. Same card on all purchases, same card I brought in. Should I go back?

honestly, i would say no, going by the policy. it was really nice of them to give you your money back before even though (it seems like) they didn't have to per written policy - but i don't think one can really demand/insist it from them. that's just my own personal opinion. not trying to sound mean at all. :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> what's everyone's thoughts? :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I agree with you. Often times associates, and especially managers, are able and willing to "bend" company policies to help out customers they like, or who are well known as good customers. It's possible that the woman who helped was new, and unaware that such leeway had been given in the past. Going in and demanding favors, especially if the associate was following policy, is only going to leave a bad taste and a customer will be less likely to get the nice treatment they had received prior.

You guys, I have a serious question with a big problem and I need your help. Any time I've ever taken anything back to Sephora, if I have the packing slip, I get the purchase put back on my debit card. If I don't, I get store credit that can only be used in-store. I remember about a year and a half ago, right before I started taking stuff back in-store vs in mail, I asked and asked different forums and everyone said the same: That in the stores, you're golden with packing slips, and even if you don't, as long as you don't abuse the policy.

Anyway, here'es what happened: Last night since I knew I was going into Sephora today, I grabbed a few products that I had purchased that I hadn't touched. All of these products were in-box and with packing slip (I keep all of them, sometimes it's just a matter of finding them). The total for these items came to about $240. It has been at least seven months since I last did any returns, btw.

Today at the store, the woman who was handling the returns told me that only about $52 of the items could be put on the card, with the rest having to be put on cards that I could use ONLINE OR IN-STORE. BTW, these products were mostly purchased in April, some in February, and two in December. none of them older than that.

Do you know what went wrong here? I have the receipts and original packing slips she gave back to me. She didn't even give me a reason why, and she didn't seem to know what she was doing.

I believe in-store purchases may have a longer return period than online, but since your purchases were online, you have 60 days to return them for a credit in your original form of payment. For 61-90 days, you get a store credit. It's good that they gave you one that also works online because the in-store ones usually only work in-store. After 90 days they don't have to take a return so if they gave you store credit for all those, I'd call this your lucky day! I hope that doesn't sound rude, I'm saying this in a very positive way!

Not mean, you're just stating the policy.

I think when they bend the rules they should give you a heads up that it's what they are doing.  I've done that before when I worked retail, but truthfully, the same people would come back again and again.  Where I worked we kept logs and wouldn't do it for the same person more than twice.  I'm not saying @@ohsailor that you are abusing anything, just that people DO abuse these things and stores need to cover their own *****.

It was never bending the rules- I even asked them about it because so many girls on other forums told me not to think twice about it, and was told they accept all returns online or otherwise with a receipt. I've done it probably 15 times in the last 3 years, always over the 90 day period or else I would have just sent it in-mail.

(I'm not trying to get defensive, I just think a lot of the responses here aren't aware of Sephora's actual practiced in-store return policy). And again, I think what most of you are missing is that the items they wouldn't put back on my debit are the ones I purchased in the last 60 days. They did give me a regular refund for a product I purchased in December and one in March. She couldn't explain why, seemed confused (she was new) and all products had receipts, and were unused.

Also, they had no problem giving me in-store credit for an item that was obviously purchased months and months ago that I didn't have a receipt for (The Divergent $60 set) as it sold out months and months ago. My problem is with the uneveness.

Also, the receipts just say they will accept returns back from online within 60 days, so if time was the problem, they wouldn't have accepted the returns at all, no?

I've never worked at Sephora so I don't know how much discretion they have to make those choices.  I didn't work at a large chain and we had a lot of freedom to use our judgement and I'm sure some of our decisions seemed uneven.   There were people who always said no.  I guess it's like how often at Panera when you ask for a water cup to they give you a big cup and how often to they give you one of those tiny cups.  Just depends on who is working.

Maybe my Sephora's all have a very lax policy (but as I said before, MUA laughed at me when I was worried about taking a 5-month item back with receipt), but I went back after work and explained what happened, what usually happens, and although it was a bit of a challenge they way they did it (but sort of fun) long story short: I got my money back :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> This is just to let some of you ladies know that maybe yours is my lax than you think, as well.

When you spend $2500 a year on makeup (at least :( /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> ugh embarrassing), you're going to have some returns, and because I am not very mobile due to my disease, I usually just go through the in-mail return route. Any purchase I've returned in-store has been 1. Over 90 days old or 2. From the store

As an aside, they also let me return point perks back there if I don't like them.

Edit: Also, let me say that I would be even more fed up with Sephora if they were to change their policy, since Nordstrom accepts returns with receipt no matter how old, and if you don't have a receipt, they give you a gift card you can use in-store or online, and I've been meaning to post all the freebies I got from buying an $80 bottle of perfume at Macy's. Seriously, it totaled up to $150 worth of free stuff because they were doing so many GWPs/specials at one time.

  There's a few take-out places I order from, and when I order a side of marinara/ranch/cocktail sauce/etc, I never know if I'm going to get a tiny 2oz tub or the 6oz tub.

Like I said, the first time, I was nervous as hell and would have just been happy with store credit, but everyone on MUA basically LOL'd at me for being so worried. Maybe some stores have tightened up?

I wish I was as lucky as you girls! When I tried to return an online order a couple of months ago (within the week it arrived), they were so rude and tried to act like they couldn't return from online at all.... Oh the joys of living in NYC!

Sorry if I'm butting in as I haven't been following the whole question/issue, but could the issue be that you paid with partial gift card?  If the order was more than half paid by gift card, there is no way in their system to put it back on your cc/debit card.  It's a silly system if you ask me, but that's how their system works I believe.  Just a conjecture.

Those who have tried the Clarisonic Cashmere Luxe brush: Is it closer in feel to the sensitive head brush or the extra-sensitive head? I'm afraid the sensitive head is still too rough for me and I'm wondering if i should get the Cashmere Luxe or the extra-sensitive head.

No, there were no payments by gift cards. I wish, haha! Too much money spent on makeup this year.

It actually does bother me the way they're so uneven. It's a store-to-store policy, I guess. I'm sorry that happens to you. Maybe I'm given the benefit of the doubt because I've already spent like $2000 this year? (Don't judge me!) I'm shocked so many here have experienced this, because before I found this board I was on another major makeup board that also does trades and reviews, and when I asked if it would be okay for me to take back an online order over 90 days old, they all basically laughed and said Sephora stores have the most lax returns system in the world.

Fun story!

In my marketing class last night we were going over Customer Lifetime Values. I volunteered to discuss my spend at everyone's favorite store, Sephora. Taking that spend since the time I was a customer until the time I will probably die, coupled with "referrals" (which I said to be 15 people/year who purchase 100% of the time. a lot of my friends ask me to take them shopping/tell them what to buy. they always buy), I have a CLV of $70.3 million dollars. Isn't that nuts?

I'm sure most of us have CLVs in that range -- which is hilarious because you'd figure point promos/rouge benefits/customer service would be constantly on point.

Got a free sample of Josie Maran black oil argan mascara when I re ordered my hair products the other day. Wow! I am seriously obsessed. Grab this while they still have it.

It is a lot different than the others. It is not abrasive at all and just glides over the skin. I did not like it but I usually use the normal head. I might have not tried the final version since I tested it.

Oh, okay. In that case, no clue! They were just being inconsistent.

In general I think their store return policy is vague, possibly on purpose, perhaps so that store managers can do what they need to do to service the good customers but reserves the right to refuse some if they abuse it.  I usually return my stuff within the 90 days just to avoid any hassle.  I think I've only returned items past 90 days maybe twice? (once recently, once a few months ago)  Both times they put it back on the card, but the recent time the person was new and didn't know what to do because the system was giving her problems (the item I returned had gone up in price since I bought it 7 months ago) - she had to consult another SA who told her to just override the price and return it back to card "as long as they have the receipt". *shrug*  This is a store that's historically been pretty nice though.  I certainly did not expect them to do that.
