For me it was just how murky things were executed by the marketing team.  Expectations were set and they were not met, simple as that.

In my prior life as a marketing professional, a good marketing program was at minimum about - customer experience gap anaylsis, setting proper expectations, monitoring client feedback, tweaking delivery content to deliver on promise and taking ownership for issues that occur.  Which from my angle was not done very well by Sephora if at all.

Punishing your client base for process exceptions that you did not forsee was just never done...  It's just an indication of a 'lacking' marketing team.  If a process exception is occuring then change your policy, across the board rather then do this dodgy selective elimination routine that preceeded their live chat.  Costco does it, Amazone does it, amend their policy that is...  Sephora has the corporate reaction speed better suited for a 3rd rate grocery chain.

I think that Sephora should have never mention Rouge for the most part all they did was piss off customers who spend money in their stores.

I think they also gained a bunch of new client base (read revenue generation, thousands upon thousands) that focused their spending at Sephora in 2013 to qualify.  Foregoing the opportunity of better values at Nordy's, Origins, Stila, etc... for some 'beauty product in the sky.'

I'm really not THAT bitter, LOL...   I'm already diversifying my spendings into branded web sites (Origins!) and at department stores.  The little coded give aways are fun but when compared to the GWP that department stores put out, it sort of blows Sephora's GWP out of the water.  The only difference is that you have to wait for the department GWP, rather then select from one of Sephora's many, many codes and the advantages is that you can get specifically what you want.   With Sephora, one does accrue points that can be redeemed as well. Which I do like, very much!  The advantage for me with Sephora is that you can 'select' your GWP so that it's something you really want.

I'm just not dedicated to spending ALL of my money at Sephora anymore.  I used to not check things out and just get it at Sephora but now I check the department stores and the brand's website as well.  I use to stock up and buy multiples for gifting when Sehphora was having a sale but I don't do that anymore either.  They didn't give me the bells and whistles they promised so I'm going to find them elsewhere.

Totally agree.  I also lump their challenges in not delivering on promises as "not my problem."  It's *their* job to figure out what can and cannot be done and adapt accordingly.  It's business.  A company this big *must* be able to adapt and figure out how to make good on this sort of thing.  Somewhat fortunately for me, this whole thing is going down during a year I was probably going to rein in my spending anyway (and it turns out that this is indeed how the year has worked out.  I just have *so much stuff* that I can't justify buying anything more right now, except *maybe* a shimmery brown pencil eyeliner, but even then, I'm turning to Birchbox since I have something like a hundred bucks in gift cards there), so it's not like I'm shelling out a ton of money and not getting promised returns in the form of extra bonus perks.  I accidentally hit Rouge, so I wasn't deliberately aiming for the added stuff, but it's really pissing me off that they made all of these promises that we're still waiting to see happen.  (Certain indie eyeshadow companies are probably really happy I'm this annoyed with Sephora because I'm sending a lot of money their way instead!  Which reminds me:  I need to go make those GDE and GCC orders I've been planning all week now.)

Just saw a Dr dennis gross face steamer with 14 alpha wipes and some other things for $125,anyone have an opinion on this? Sorry I can't provide a link I'm on my phone.

My issue with Rouge is this. Here is what is advertised as the "benefits" of rouge: 1. Free shipping: Yes, I have gotten this and it is nice. While nice, as Tweakabell mentioned, Nordstrom will give me free shipping without spending 1k first. 2. Access to the beauty studio: NO THANK YOU. I don't want gross testers used all over my face. I've never actually tried this, but from stories I've read it's very hit or miss on whether people are actually being able to use this. I've read numerous stories of rouge people being told they need to spend $50 to get makeup applied. 3. Exclusive rouge events. I've had one in 6 months of being Rouge. At said event, I got nothing that VIBs couldn't get 3 days later, other than a muffin. The store wasn't any less busy than it would be on a normal day IMO 4. Special Surprise Gifts: I have recieved no gifts, surprise or otherwise. I don't consider a code I have to spend $35 to use a "gift". Edit: That's kind of a lie. They sent me a giftcard for participating in the live chat, which was very nice. I'll say I recieved no gifts without complaining first lol. So is Rouge awful? I don't think so. Is it what they hyped it up to be? No, not even close.
I'm really glad you spelled out the Rouge benefits, after reading your post I realized that I have never once used a Rouge perk. 1. Free shipping - I have flash which was only $10 and is faster shipping than Rouge shipping (granted this will go away but for this year it made my Rouge free shipping obsolete). 2. Beauty Studio - Never used it. Just not overly interested. 3. Rouge Events - The only one I was invited to was last Sundays 15% off event which I wasn't really interested in. I've never been invited to another Rouge event. I live in Los Angeles where there are many Sephora stores so one would think that there would be events taking place around here. 4. Surprise gifts - I've never received one and like others have pointed out I don't consider a code a surprise gift. I can see some people liking these perks but I guess they are either not something I'm interested in or have not been offered to me personally. I'm glad that I didn't pay any extra money than I was already spending just to become Rouge. I have a similar sentiment to many others, Rouge isn't a terrible program it's just nothing overly special and in my case is barely any different than being VIB.

I just got my cartier rouge "gift" the other day - wow.  I love these types of perfume samples, so lovely - I have some similar to these from Hermes.

I managed to get 3 out of the 4 vibr "gifts" - the perfume, nars  and serum.  I wasn't initially interested in nars until someone mentioned mixing with my foundation/tint and now I love it.

however, it would be nice if sephora would spread these out over the month, instead of having them all at once!   I would have loved to get the dior lipstick, but that was gone in a heartbeat - and I never got an email outside of the serum - if it weren't for these forums, I wouldn't have known about the other GWP.   They should have ongoing and ensure that they stock up for their VIBR members.

I feel that sephora should do more of these deluxe/full sized GWP for rouge members only.  I don't mean to sound mean, but BI and VIB members should not be able to redeem them.  Also, the min. should be reduced - seriously, this isn't a perk if I have to spend more money -- I mean, I will anyway, but the min should be 25.00.  I do like the fact that you can only redeem the promo once and not multiple times.

The VIBR event should have had these types of deluxe samples to give to us instead of some foils.   I have never gotten a surprise gift in any of my orders, it would be nice to have a little something extra (and I don't mean an extra foil!).   I did complain about the VIBR rouge event to sephora and whereas I did not receive any $$ or points, they did send me the VIBR mirror - which my sephora didn't have to give out at their event!  lol

I just filled out the survey for the event last weekend.  If anyone is interested, here is what I said:

I did not go in the morning as I decided to sleep in and my nearest Sephora is a 40-50 minute drive.  (I shop online most often).  However, since I had already RSVP'd and printed out my confirmation, I stopped by in the afternoon.  On the one hand, I liked the idea of closed door shopping.  It sounded kind of fun and exclusive.  On the other hand, I was also a bit concerned the staff might be overwhelming and pushy.  I was hoping I could pick up my canvas bag and samples, even in the afternoon.  I thought maybe (as I had RSVP'd) it would have been reserved for me.  But when I checked out, I gave the lady at the counter my ticket, and she wasn't even sure I was supposed to get 15% off.  She did check.  Maybe they ran out of canvas bags, but she gave me a lips tote instead and a few nice samples to try.  Later, I received a purchase online--the Pantone Universe color of the year face set--and decided I wanted more lipstick.  The lipstick was sold out online.  So, I decided to call up to Chattanooga to see if they had any.  Rather than call the main Sephora, I called the one inside JC Penny first.  The girl on the phone (Jill A.) took my credit card number and said she was placing a canvas bag with my order, all of which would be waiting for me to pick up the following day.  So to me, I hope you will run events at Sephora inside JCP's along with the freestanding stores.  I just feel like the JCP store is more low key with better service, though I do have to go upstairs to the main Sephora for certain brands.  Also, having the option of shopping closed doors at other times would've been great.  For example, shopping at closing or an hour after normal closing (depending on what the mall would allow) would be better for me as I'm a night owl.  If you did this again, in my Chattanooga JCP Sephora, later in the day or at night, I would probably go.  But morning events just aren't for me.  Now, as this is the first opportunity I've had to communicate about the Rouge program at all, I would like to add some more general comments.  Private shopping is nice, but not necessary.  Starting the sale for Rouge members a few days early, before things run out of stock is even nicer.  Still,  I think what most Rouge members (based on chatting at makeuptalk.com) would like to see is little thank you gifts sent to us out of the blue.  I know that is what I was expecting, especially around Christmas time.  It doesn't have to be expensive or large, but if you could put together makeup care packages and send them to all Rouge members once or twice a year, with deluxe samples of new products--say spring new releases and holiday releases--you'd probably have much happier Rouge customers.  Also, not to sound like we are expecting too much, but a slightly higher percent off than what regular BI's and VIB's get would be nice.  Say, 17.5 or 18% if 20% is too high.  It would still be a nod to those who are Rouge that we are valued more than someone who just walks into Sephora for the first time and fills out a BI card.  (Or at least my understanding is that the 15% off applies to all BI members, though regular members have to wait the longest for the sale to start and have the shortest amount of time to shop the sale).  Oh, and if we do get to bring a friend to a Rouge event, the friend should get the free gift (in this case, the canvas bag).  It makes us feel bad when our friend is treated differently than we are when they are our invited guests.  Personally, though I made Rouge when it first came out, I have begun to look to other stores such as Nordstrom's and beauty.com for my beauty needs.  In fact, I had many items in my cart just waiting for what I thought would be a 20% off sale.  When I saw it was only 15%, I found out beauty.com was running a 20% off spring sale just before the Sephora sale, so I bought what I could there instead of through Sephora.  And Nordstrom's always has free shipping, and many times better gifts with purchase.  I know I won't make Rouge again this year.  Whether or not I make Rouge in the future will depend on whether or not Sephora steps up the program to make it worthwhile, based on the customers' real desires, as opposed to what Sephora thinks should be valued by the customers.  Although, I expect the program to pick up before the end of this year.  If I see perks given out in 2015 that I feel I should've gotten for making Rouge status before it was even announced, I will feel twice let down by the program.  I hope someone actually reads this who has influence upon the program and takes it to heart.  Thanks for listening!

Free shipping would be super nice. Also I love free gifts. But I think the problem is that I like to have blinders on to how much I am spending but if I knew I was spending $1000 a year I'd feel super guilty. I kind of hope I don't qualify. Lol

I agree that the language they used when they first were describing the program made it sound like you would open your mailbox one day and find a sample bag with deluxe samples to try for new launches that season, be invited to special store events with reps describing new lines as they come out, and get discounts and sales above and beyond the other loyalty categories. This isn't based on MY expectations of what Rouge should be, this is based on Sephora's description of what it would be.  They kind of created this monster backlash, and while YES, I love having the free shipping, that's the only thing I'm getting out of Rouge right now.  I definitely have been taking more business to beauty.com and Ulta, and it is mostly because the benefits are superior to what is being offered for Sephora Rouge members...when it comes to shopping with a 20% discount, I'm almost always going to be making a large enough purchase for free shipping.

Also, I know someone mentioned this a while ago on the other Sephora board, but doesn't it seem like last year there were more little gift bags offered with codes and there hasn't hardly been one of these all year.  Like, last year the gift bag with the foils that they gave out at the in store event would have just been a normal code that you'd have put in to get along with a normal $25+ purchase? And whats the deal with making all the codes valid only with $35 purchase instead of $25?

I think they are going to have to up their game to keep all of these high spending ladies. We are savvy shoppers! Nobody has mentioned birchbox but they also have better perks. I receive tons of discounts throughout the year from them. Their loyalty points program is amazing. Now they have an ace program for those who earn 500 points per year which means no minimum for shipping. I have even received surprise thank you gifts from hem in the mail. My only issue with them is they are more limited on brands, but they also carry some brands I love that Sephora doesn't sell, like Amika and Joie. Although you only get two samples per order and there is a minimum, they are usually more deluxe samples than the ones sephora throws in.

So totally off topic but how does this BirchBox thing work? The boxes they send always looks crappy to me...foils and tea, not really my jam. But people seem to love it, am I missing something????

Sorry!

Sorry
Birchbox was really good when I first started. the samples slowly started to go down hill and I cancelled BUT their rewards program is AMAZING especially if you refer people. You average about 50 points for each box you review every 100 points gets you $10 in their shop and every 3 months (approx) you get anniversary codes to use. It's a pretty good program

I just got annoyed that everyone else's box seemed to be better than mine and my Sample Society boxes had larger samples.

Sorry!
You're seeing the wrong boxes!  There are occasional foils (generous foils that typically last three or four uses, and they're much more user-friendly than a lot of the tubes of similar products that they send out) and teas, but here are my past six boxes:

I've been a subscriber for three years now, and I've already re-upped for a fourth (if you subscribe annually and do reviews, you're basically paying $2.50 per box after points).  Check out the Birchbox section!  We have many, *many* posts about the service over there!  The Rouge program has been so pointless and their sales clerks so deliberately blind to anyone they don't think should be shopping in their stores that I'm planning on shifting my spending over to Birchbox.

ETA:  Whoops, kawaiimeows already took care of that!

Thanks girls! I'll have to check out their store, that makes it more interesting....

Thanks @kawaiimeows and @meaganola for helping me with that - I wasn't aware! sincerest apologies.

I also love Birchbox. I used to shop frequently at Sephora, but since Rouge blew up, I've shifted my spending and only go to Sephora if I must or if they have a great offer. Now my spending is more like Birchbox > Ulta > Nordstrom > Sephora, especially since their Ace program rolled out with free shipping on all orders. I don't have to pay sales tax since they don't have a physical presence here in CA, they ship super quickly (and use USPS Priority, so I can get packages on Saturday, unlike UPS), they regularly have 20% off coupons floating around, they have fantastic customer service, and their rewards program is the best ($100 spent at Birchbox gives you $10 back, unlike Ulta's $3.50 or Sephora's itty bitty 100 point perks).

I subscribe to the box. I happen to love tea, so it makes me happy when they send that out, but their foils are generous (and I actually prefer them, it's much better than getting a mostly-empty tube (COOLA!)). I think that it's great for a $5 box (after reviews, though it's even less expensive than that if you get an annual subscription with a double points code), and it gets me to try things that might not otherwise be on my radar.

This is a big thing for me.  $10 that you can spend on *anything in their store*.  You want to save feedback points up for ten months to get a beloved palette for free or sit on a stash of points so you can grab -- with no budgeting guilt -- a random green eyeliner or an unexpected amazing limited edition box that suddenly pops up out of nowhere?  Go for it.  You aren't restricted to whatever they want to offer for point rewards.  You can't use them for your monthly sub, but I think that's it.  I believe you can use them for gift subs, although I haven't tried that.  I *have* tried using them for gift cards.  That *does* work.  Repeatedly.
