Hey everybody, I have a question about hair dye. I'm 17, asian, with thick black hair. I haven't done anything to really damage my hair except for straighten/curl it for my whole life. I tried to dye my hair brown probably a year ago with some crappy dye, but it didn't really work.

About a month ago, I tried dying my hair with a dark brown Garnier dye, and it didn't really work either. Idk if it's just the hair dye, or if my hair is just extremely powerful and doesn't want to lighten up. Nothing really happened to my hair after; it wasn't dry and it didn't feel any different, so two weeks ago I tried to dye it again, this time with a Revlon dye designed to lighten dark hair. I know you're not supposed to dye your hair after 4 weeks if you already dyed it, but this Revlon dye didn't do squat to my hair either. I'm pretty sure there was a small percent of bleach in it, and my hair probably got half a shade lighter, didn't get dry, didn't feel any different.

So, my question is if I just dyed my hair with this Revlon dye two weeks ago, and dyed it with a Garnier dye a month ago, would trying to dye my hair again be extremely bad for my hair even though I hasn't really been affected by the other two dyes? I'll probably be using a dark ash blonde this time on my hair, if that helps at all.

Hmmm... I wouldn't recommend it.  You should be very careful to not over-process your hair (even if you don't notice any difference externally).  I'd be super reluctant to dye it again, anyway.  I'd rather have the same hair color for a little while longer than risk having my hair break off or something.

Of course, I'm not a professional by any means.  I have dyed my own and my sister's hair several times (box dyes and toner/developer combos from Sallys), but I've never had a problem like this.

Good luck and I hope it works out!

Xteeny,

I am not one to go to the salon to get my hair dyed because it is expensive and my hair takes well to boxed dyes from the store, but in your case it may be time to go to a professional.  If your hair is not responding to at-home processes it may take stronger products that a stylist is trained to mix.  I'm not 100% positive, but I believe it is recommended that you wait 4 weeks in between processes.  Hope this helps.

Jeannine
