From the Beauty Brain today...

Lina says: I was very happy to read your post about coconut oil penetrating hair. I have been using it for a while and feel my hair is stronger than it used to be. I’d like to keep using coconut oil and I want to add olive oil to make my hair shiny but I’m worried that mixing the two oils will stop the coconut oil from penetrating. Is it ok to mix two oils on my hair? Thanks for all of your helpful information - you’ve kept me from wasting money on over-hyped products.

The Left Brain provides an oily update:

Thanks for your kind words, Lina. Yes, studies have shown that coconut oil actually penetrates the hair to help make it stronger. And as it turns out, olive oil also has penetrating properties. Scientists at the Textile Research (J. Cosmet.Sci 52, 169-184, 2001) tested Olive oil, Avocado oil, Meadowfoam seed oil, Sunflower oil, and Jojoba oil. Their results showed that straight chain glycerides like olive oil easily penetrate into the hair. Polyunsaturated oils , like Jojoba oil, are more “open†in their structure so they don’t pass through the layers of cuticles very well.

What does that mean in plain English? Olive and Avocado oils penetrate all the way into the hair shaft. Meadowfoam seed oil partially penetrates, and jojoba and sunflower oils don’t penetrate at all. They’re very superficial and don’t really provide any practical benefit. Kind of like Ryan Seacrest.

And to answer your question: mixing coconut and olive oils shouldn’t be a problem. In fact, it’s possible that the olive/coconut oil combination might even penetrate hair better. I won’t bore you with the details, but it has to do with mixed micelles. I’d start with a 50/50 mixture and see how that works for your hair.

haha on ryan seacrest. im gonna try this, i've done olive oil and i havent noticed a difference

yup, great idea. i tried this once but for a body scrub. i'll try it on my hair tonight.

I have coconut oil in a spritzer bottle. It's actually a product, not the regular oil, but it does make my hair reaallly soft, it's damaged from a perm I had, and it makes it softer and less dry.

I really want to buy some of the straight oil for when I finish my product, but I just thought some people might like to know that you should be able to put the product in a spray bottle and spritz it onto your hair

How are you using the Coconut Oil? Are you applying it on wet or dry hair, and for how long????

i tried the two oils mixed together (with a bit of palm oil too). my hair is soo soft.

btw, i don't like much the olive oil smell but luckily it doesn't seem to stay on my hair.

How much do you end up putting on your dry hair for the night? Does it make your pillow case a greasy mess????

that's how i do too. I put lil bit of coconut oil (about a dime size)on my hair before i go to sleep. And i use small towel to cover the pillow so you dont have coconut oil everywhere.

Pink Sugar, can you tell me the name of the coconut oil in a spritzer bottle?

Thanks, Carolyn

Also, what do you think are the biggest benefits to your hair?

Does it make your pillow case a greasy mess???? hard to say, i judge based on how my ends are dry (i avoid my already greasy roots). usually i use the amount of oil you can put in one hand (about a few tbsp). i like to apply it in two times and comb my hair so i'm sure it penetrates.i like to do a braid, so it doesn't really grease my pillow case, a bit but it's not like i have to wash it immediately.

for your other question, apart from the great smell of coconut, i noticed my hair looks thicker. it's also easy to comb. my ends are smooth and soft, that's the biggest difference for me.

maybe it's just me, but i find my natural tousled hair cuter when i've applied coconut oil the night before.

Edit : i do that about 3/4 times a week.

I wondr how different this is from OJON, other than the price. I know OJON's smell is horrible, but isn't it the same?

Thank you for this post! I've always wondered.... I have a girlfriend who lives in India and I asked her what her secret was to her BEAUTIFUL long hair and she told me coconut oil....

) She said everyone in her family uses it...and she could not believe that I didn't know about it.
