Very good. :)

Let's see here... -I can't stand lipsticks that don't twist all the way down ::cringes:: -Compacts with a "bubble-like" top (like MAC's msf) that pop out..UGH! Nothing is worse than having to worry about your makeup being fully exposed -Old Urban Decay Primer Potion packaging..enough said -Sample baggies..I have a bazillion of these and I won't buy anymore because they are such a pain to use -Those plastic sheets that come over makeup. They usually come in palettes and I ALWAYS end up nicking one of the shadows :( /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Also, packaging I love! I've griped enough already.

Twist-up lip and eye pencils because I am a lazy s.o.b.

Stuff that's sturdy enough so I can throw it in my backpack and know it won't get punctured by any spare compasses I have floating around in the bottom.

Recently I found a lipstick with melt-proof packaging. I can't remember the brand, but it actually works and it's GENIUS. I can stick it in my pocket with no worries.

For colours, I like my packaging to be either metallic, black, or pastel.

I don't like heart patterns but I adore flowers.

And I love a good dust-proof compact mirror or brush guard.

I own a few items from Kat Von D and I do love her packaging. Most of what I own are palettes but they are sleek and fit nicely and instead of have a funky bulky shape to them, the outside is different and super easy to know what's in there. Tarte is amazing with blushes but it ends about there.

One thing I absolutely hate is when companies make a big bulky palette and there's lipglosses in there, just in open little pans, with eyeshadows right beside it. I have the Too Faced Confections palette and I never use it because the glosses are right under 8 shadows and then above blush and bronzer and fallout keeps getting into them and I don't want them to get messed up and it's such a waste. I personally think if you're going to put a lipstick/gloss in a palette, make them in little sample tubes.

Another thing I don't like, as many have mentioned, are the Benefit boxes. I have seen so many boxes in collections that are huge and there might be like 4 eyeshadows in it because the rest were taken out. Like was that really needed?

Wet N Wild matte lipsticks get on my nerves because its a bit hard to pull off but then the lipstick doesn't go all the way down in the tube so every time I pop it off it always catches it and gets everywhere.

And since everyone is talking about the sponge applicators, how about those crappy lip applicators that are flimsy and shed any time it gets picked up and leaves little hairs!!

I forgot this! Omg... I am trying to work through a bottle of colorstay foundation and HATEEEEE that it's a bottle with no pump (I think the new bottles have one?), but it's annoying to have to get product onto the back of my hand then rotate the bottle to stop the flow of product... I just want a pump. is that so hard? This is just an example but there's so many other foundations out there with the same thing that it just drives me batty.

Are you referring to Rimmel's Stay Matte? Because i totally agree. They're fantastic an cheap, but who the hell designed that container. Fine for home use, but the top doesn't stay on at all, and they couldn't even throw in a powder puff? I mean, I use brushes for powder at home, but a cheap little puff is fine for on the go touch-ups. Great product, crappy packaging.
Yes! I mean, for as good as the powder is, it's kind of annoying that more time wasn't invested into the packaging...especially because rimmel isn't always so cheap with their packaging, you know? so it's like 'what were they thinking?'

@turntrekgodhead AMEN about the Stila lip glazes packaging! Who thought that was a good idea?!?! I have a Chanel gloss and I regret buying it based off of the stupid clicky applicator. I either get no product or an insane amount that is such a waste of product. That is my biggest makeup pet peeve!

Stop putting creams beside the powders in palettes. Why is that even a problem for makeup companies to figure out?
I'm with you on theBalm. I am an absolute sucker for vintage or vintage-inspired packaging. Tokyo milk will be the death of me.

In my practical an thrifty mind, I used to get annoyed that I love packaging so much. But honestly, some packaging just makes me feel awesome. If I feel like a Golden Age starlet putting it on, it just puts me in a great mood.

And I love cute packaging boxes because I can always find a way to recycle and diy them.

...Actually, this brings up another question: how much of packaging do we love/hate because of how it makes us feel? I know that a lot of beauty companies kind of bank on the "experience" of the product via packaging, and the promise of what the product might do, vs the quality of it. Like... I am a giant sucker for tom ford blushes (despite how expensive they are) just as much for how sleek and beautiful they are as for the great quality. It also gives that "feeling" of luxury.

Uuuuuuuuuugh. It literally doesn't matter how beautiful a lipstick is, if it doesn't twist all the way down, I will not buy it. I have smooshed too many lipsticks and sent them to their early graves that way. (Not to mention the mess it is trying to clean up) Admittedly, I'm pretty clumsy when it comes to closing my lipstick. I don't even look as I put the cap on. But that's because I'm used to Revlon lipsticks and their products always twist down all the way.

Feeling must play an integral role. I've long been of the opinion that makeup in general is less about how it makes you look and more about how it makes you feel. I know for myself, makeup gives me great confidence. Whenever I'm feeling anxious, putting on makeup helps me relax and bring a little order back into my life.

So if packaging can captured those aesthetics that make me feel great, all the better! I won't sacrifice quality for packaging, but if two products are fairly comparable, I'll usually lean towards the one that has packaging I like. And for me, the things that make me feel comfortable are vintage, ornate, and whimsical. Maybe that's why others prefer sleek, elegant packaging: it's not only what looks best to them, but also what makes them feel best.

Ugh, yes that packaging. I remember that either myself or my mom had a powder with similar packaging when I was a kid. Or maybe it was hers and she passed it on to me to play with when the plastic cover cracked - that makes more sense. Whenever I see packaging like that, I always think of how frustrated I'm going to feel when that lid cracks or worry about it coming off in a bag or something.

It was actually the deciding factor for me when I was choosing between it and a Physician's Formula powder. I was hesitating between the two as I wasn't sure yet if talc was an issue for me (possibly causing break-outs), but had heard so many good things about the Rimmel powder. Once I saw the packages, though, it became a lot easier. While I dislike how bulky the Physician's Formula compact is, I at least don't worry about it.

I wish all my make up packaging could be streamline, minimal, secure and sturdy. Things for which right angles are not appropriate, should have flat tops and bottoms for neat stacking or efficient travel. This is my dream.

YES. I forgot this one. Individual eyeshadows or blushes with rounded tops are so annoying!

I completely agree! I'm currently having an issue where I love the packaging of a powder but it contains less product and is more expensive. The two I'm debating between are fairly similar in terms of quality. In this situation what would you choose?? Thanks!

Hmm. Well, well I would calculate the exact price difference between the two powders. Out of curiosity, which powders are they?

If it's a major difference (ounce for ounce), I'd probably go for the cheaper one. But if it's just a couple of bucks, I might splurge for the nice packaging.

The nice thing about powder is that is can easily be placed in another container. I use a cheap, translucent powder in a pretty basic case. But since I love vintage things, I'm going to be looking around for a vintage powder jar this Spring, and then I'll simply transfer the powder.

I think you just have to decide for yourself how much the feeling/packaging of the powder matters to you and if it's worth the price difference. The nice thing is, if you buy it and then decide it wasn't worth it, you'll know better next time. Or you could simply return it.

I hope this helps! I always feel so awkward helping people decide what to buy because, ya know, money gets awkward.

But I hope you can make a decision you're happy with!

I am trying to decide between Urban Decays ultra definition finishing powder and Loracs Porefessional baked powder. Both are the same price but on Sunday Loracs powder will be 50% off during Ulta's 21 days of beauty. Lorac has .32oz and UD has .26oz. I feel like I like UD better but not enough to make a clear cut decision lol. But like you said maybe I can buy the Lorac powder since it's on sale and if I don't end up liking it I'll know better next time :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" /> Thanks for your help!

Besame cosmetics! I have been drooling over their lipsticks for the longest time and it is because of the packaging. Do I need another red lipstick to add to what seems like a bagillon? No. Will I still purchase it because of the insane vintage packaging? You betcha!

I am a 90's child so I have yet to grow out of the style. I am obsessed with anything 90's...and I purchased the Covergirl's smoochies because they reminded me of the 90's. I do not like covergirl products, but I had to have it! Luckily, I ended up loving the product...I think it may be due to the packaging.

But that also reminds me, if the product looks cheap, I won't buy it. It could be the HG of all HG products, but if it looks like a $1 find from the local dollar tree, I just can't bring myself to do it. I am a packaging snob.

Also, this isn't packaging, but I am a name snob. You name your product something risque or cute I will purchase it. Ie: Urban Decay 69, Immature part of me is like *giggles* I'm buying that. Nars Orgasm. *giggles* My HG blush thank god, but the name got me. TheBalm Jovi Palette. "Alice Copper" and "Third Eyed Blinded" sold that palette to me.

I'm the same way. I am forever stuck in the 90s...I still want theBalm's Balm Jovi palette for the "Third Eye Blinded" shade...I mean, $39 (I think) is worth one bad-ass eyeshadow lol

Lol your post reminds me of how I badly want the YSL sheer candy balms ONLY because of their packaging. I know it probably works the same as others out there but the packaging is gorgeous. I haven't brought myself to spend $30 on a lipstick yet tho but I will one day!

If it helps, I LOVE that palette! I believe it is a necessity to living. It is an amazing color. It is the one I use the most in the palette.

Oh gosh, theBalm kills me with their names. I saw the Meet Matt(e) Nude and there went my money.

Also. *shakes fist* I both curse and thank you for introducing me the Besame! I think I may need to ask for something from Besame for my birthday now...

On a whim, I bought a red Chanel lipstick (I rarely wear red, but I have a problem with wanting to purchase them) for the packaging. You push the bottom down and then it pops out, instead of just pulling the cap off. I didn't even bother looking at the price and when they told me $40 I almost choked, but boy oh boy did I want it. I did buy it, I wore it twice, and I honestly do not regret the purchase. Every so often I pull it out look at the pretty little thing and smile and put it back. I was in Chicago when I bought it, and I LOVE Chicago, it's my home away from home, so I think that's why I love it so much. It reminds me of where I was at when I bought it.

If it makes you feel any better I have made multiple lip purchases over $30 and I love them. Honestly, I feel like a splurge now and then is just a necessity. I bought the Chanel, MAC, and Dior lip purchases in one day, just because I felt like I deserved a little treat. Maybe don't go as crazy as I did, but if you have been wanting it for awhile I say go for it.
