Hi Everyone,

Here is some useful tips.

- Even if you plan on growing your hair out further you should trim your hair once every 3 months, if not split ends will cause your hair to break off and your hair will begin to lose it's beauty, if you plan on just maintaining your length, a trim once every month and a half to two months should suffice.

- Don't use a brush to detangle your hair, this will stretch your hair and may cause your hair to break off. Instead use your fingers, a pick, or a wide tooth comb to detangle your hair.

- When detangling your hair work your way from the tips of your hair up to the hair roots. Work on detangling one section of your hair at a time and go in a downward direction.

- Be gentle when detangling, pulling down on your hair too hard will cause breakage.

Thanks

Maya Willmott

I learned the whole don't use a brush when it's wet wayyyyy wayyyyy back in beauty school.  It's amazing how so little people know that one fact that could actually make or "break" their hair.  Awesome tips!

the 3 month trim rule is more individual depending on the person and their health.  Like, I can go a year without trimming my hair and still not see any split ends, but if I get sick for a week, my hair will be ravaged a month later.

I'd just say if you see a decent amount of split ends, it's time to trim.  If your hair ends look healthy, then let them grow!

^ Agreed. I cut my hair about once a year (seriously!) and I don't have a lot of split ends. Some, sure, but nothing to write home about! But it's definitely time for a cut, I want more layers again!

Thanks for the tips.  When I had long hair, I hated to trim my ends.  I always assumed I was cutting away my hair and it would seem as it wasn't growing.  Well I sure did get the hang of doing it after one bad experience.

yeah...trimming your hair never helps it to "grow"... your hair is going to grow at the rate it's going to grow, and the only thing that'll really speed it up is by staying healthy and getting the right nutrients.

Hair trimming just gets rid of the split ends, which is what causes your hair to break and get shorter.  (if the end gets split, it'll split all the way up the shaft of the hair, but if you trim it off, it'll have a clean cut and you don't have to worry about it continuing to split up the hair.)  Even if it was split and you peel off one part of it, the remaining hair is now thinner and again more prone to breakage.  So if your hair is healthy and has no split ends, you don't need to trim it.  If it has a ton of split ends and you don't trim it though, the hair will continue to break easily and just keep getting shorter faster than your head can grow it.

It is true, it is an individual thing. However, one should take care of hair and forget when the time comes to do something with it (for example - to change your hair style)

My hair is thin and prone to tangles and breakage, and i have to agree trimming helps having healthier looking ends. It helps maintaning an overall good looking appearance which is important for long hair, but it doesn't have a direct effect on your hair's length.

I also agree about the brush. Mine have natural bristles so they're softer but i still use them rarely, i much prefer a good comb. I always try to detangle my hair with a comb, i've done so for many years now and it has proven to be less damaging. Of course i still have those days i wished i was bald and brush my hair in 10 seconds, but that happens rarely.

I've found if you spray a detangler or leave in conditioner to towel-dried hair and use with a wide tooth comb or pick to work it thru, it won't cause any breakage to the hair. I love one by Lanza called Noni Fruit Leave In Conditioner. And as far as cutting the hair, it is always a good idea to trim hair about every 6 weeks or so just to get rid of split ends and clean it up a little.

It's a very good tip indeed, the only detail you should keep in mind is use a tiny amount then add more if needed, otherwise i find many leave in conditioners are too rich and will give the appearance of greasy on your lengths.
