I know some are probably thinking this belongs in the hair forum - but it's really not my hair, it's my scalp. I have a horrible annoying/embarassing/disgusting problem and I NEED HELP! Like once a month my scalp starts getting really really really itch. Mostly right above the base of my neck in the back, and on the sides in the front (like above my ears). All over there's humongous whitish-yellow flakes. So, you're probably thinking dandruff right? Well, sometimes these like big hard chunks build up and it gets sooooooo itchy that I pick at them and it starts to bleed. Then they scab over and it just goes through this horrible cycle and I have to use Selsun Blue shampoo until it goes away. I can't stand it. Sometimes I can't even sleep because it's soooo itchy. I think this is a lot more than just dandruff - and NO it's not lice or anything like that, cause it will get really bad and then it will go away. Does this happen to anyone else? Please please help me!

yeah...happens to me sometimes and my clients a lot. Its some form of eczema usually. Happens mostly this time of year when the heat is on. Dries out the scalp. It happens to me a lot when i use something herbaly on my hair/scalp. My scalp doesnt like anything herbal.

I know its gross, but try not to pick it, it will go away. Try some Paul Mitchell tea tree shampoo. it will help tons! Or some tea tree oil right on the patch!

I was thinking maybe it was some kind of eczema, but I don't have it anywhere else on my body - just my scalp. Well, I do get nasty scabby little dry thingys on my skin during the winter, but this happens to my scalp at all times of the year. I'll try the tea tree shampoo though. Thank you

maybe you should try to use vazelin on your head and remove it ...

& there a great sampoo for that is name is alposill

My dermatologist gave me this ointment to put on my scalp and i havent had a problem since. I know that my skin problems are due to eczema.

Heather, I've noticed since we moved to NY, I have a horrible time with my scalp itching like crazy... In about the same areas you've mentioned. I shampoo with Neutrogena T-Gel. Janelle had also suggested applying olive oil on the scalp, and massaging it in... Then washing it out with my next shampoo.

Thanks for the good ideas everyone. I was told to try Neutrogena T-gel by Nick, since it seems to work for him. I think I'll pick some up after work today.

This sounds like a good idea. I think my scalp just gets dry during the cold months, but I don't think in my case it is eczema.
Does anyone else have any other ideas? For instance, a leave-in product that is moisturizing for the scalp, but doesn't leave the hair tacky?

I agree. Sounds like Eczema . It might be triggered by your hair products if you dont have it anywhere else. A dermatologist visit might be a good idea

I have had this too and it is where my scalp gets dry. Neutrogena T-Gel Shampoo helps, I use it 1x a week.

My scalp is really sensitive. I have to use products that don't have colouring or fragrance. If I have a reaction, my scalp feels like it is on fire and horrible itching develops that doesn't go away. I know that my problem is a reaction to products.

I don't think it's a reaction to anything, as I pretty much use the same products all the time, and this seriously seems to come and go like once a month. I don't know. The itching has calmed down somewhat today.

I'm going through something similar right now as well, and it seems to get worse when the weather gets colder. I use Neutrogena's T-Gel occasionally, but I REALLY like DHS Maximum Strength SAL Shampoo. According to the description on dermstore.com it's: recommended by physicians to control crust scalp build-up while relieving itching and flaking from severe scalp conditions. It contains Salicylic Acid, which is clinically proven to be effective in breaking down crusty, flaky build-up and continues its benefits hours after the shampoo is rinsed off. The only con is that it's a pretty small bottle (4oz) for $9.30. But it works better than the T-Gel!!

I have the same exact problem...and i do have eczema...I have asked my hair stylist about it b-cuz at first i thought it was just a really bad case of dandruff. ( i pick at mine too and it is just a never-ending cycle!) i couldn't tell if i needed to wash my hair more to keep the flakes away or if i needed to wash my hair less cuz my scalp was so dry. my hair stylist said it was prolly my eczema or it could be psoriasis...anyway, i asked my doctor and he wasn't positive...

Oh no, I have a very similar problem, my scalp sometimes itches like crazy. I think I will the olive oil thing now that I'm almost done with work. I thought that may be it was the Healthy Sexy Hair or the leave in conditioner, but who knows.

a dermatologist can perscribe a special shampoo to use twice a week or

alternate w/ your regular shampoo - Ketoconazole 2% shampoo clay

also, a derm can perscribe a Diprolene lotion 0.05% (betamethasone dipropionate) its more liquidy, then a lotion

hope this helps

I have it too. Its horriable. Lasdies at the salon said its psoriasis. At the salon I go to they have shampoo for it but its like 20 bucks for a 12oz bottle.
