So I know as a general rule, you shouldn't dye your hair more than once within a day or so... but here's my scenario. I think I might be safe in this case but I would like some advice or past experience if anyone else has had a similar situation!

A while back I dyed my naturally medium ash brown hair dark brown, but the dye turned my hair BLACK. I've been letting it fade for quite a while, and as it has faded to a very dark brown, my roots have also grown in about half an inch.

Today, I bought some light ash brown dye to lighten up my hair. This is what happened: the very dark brown hair (from about half in inch away from the scalp down to the ends) turned a medium-to-dark brown. Which is fine - not as light as I was hoping but in the right direction. But my roots, which had come in in my natural medium brown, have turned MUCH lighter and look close to blonde. NOT the look I wanted!

So what I'm thinking of doing is just getting one of those root touch up kits in a medium brown shade, just to darken up the roots so they match the colour of the rest of the hair. I'm thinking since it's such a small amount of dye, and because it's only going between different shades of brown (and just on the roots) that I shouldn't encounter any major issues with dyeing so close together.

Anyone else ever have a situation like this?

The root touch up kits really don't give you much dye.

They generally just cover around the temples and along any visible part.

L'oreal seems to have a better reputation - make sure you get a box.

I don't know if it is a good idea or not, but I would probably dye the regrowth if this were my situation.

Make sure that you only dye the roots - not any of the hair shafts.

And stick to a medium ash brown. No natural/neutral/golden browns, or you might turn the blond colour into something orangy reddish.

Yes, I would definitely be sticking to a colour that is the same as what the rest of my hair is now - a medium ash brown. Red or golden tones don't look very good on me! I'm not even looking for too much dye really, I usually wear my hair down so just enough to cover the hairline and my part would be enough. The rest of my roots on the underside of my hair can wait a few weeks until I could dye the whole lot again, once my hair has had time to "rest".

Probably the worst thing that could happen when you get a hair dye is an unpleasant effect the color gives under the sun or any bright light.  My friend and I tested some hair colors we got from the beauty bar and were happy to do it on our own.  But we were a little short with all the needed colors which I think made way for the not so good effect it had on our hair.  It was all good though as you can put on black to save you but it was a good try.
