What's the best hair dye for highlights?

I use to go to this genius colorist and would only have to go once or twice a year (he did awesome razor cuts, too), but he's very pricey.

So, I would like to just highlight the back crown part of my hair and some in the back.

I have naturally very dark hair (warm black), so a carmel highlight color would be the best.

Does anyone rec a hair dye highlight product that doesn't turn "brassy" looking after awhile?

Also, color sensitive shampoo?
