Ok i was on black hair media raving about hask instant repair that contains placenta anywho it does what it says but someone informed me that it can cause cancer. Especially in AA women. So im warning EVERYONE not to use this product im thowing mine away asap. Im sad too bc it was cheap and helped to stop my hair breakage. I will def be looking for something else. I hear aphogee is great BUT its expensive and takes extra time (you have to wait for it to dry completely) and it not stinks but STANKS my room smelled like it for DAYS after i used it. So is hair ego or anyone else can suggest a protein treatment alternative that i could get at sallys or a drug store i would be very glad....preferably something that i dont have to wait to harden and all that jazz.

Ok have a lovely night yall

hrm. i know a classmate of mine last semester had a problem with hair breakage. she took prenatal vitamins and it helped a whole lot.

In all fairness, both sides of the story should be investigated before making such claims.

I tried really hard to find a statement from hask or some evidence that says different...something anything bc believe me i want this to NOT be true but everything i found was saying that its true .....if anyone can find any evidence to the contrary plz let me know bc this is the best stuff i have ever used.

Im not one to hop the ban wagon without research ...i have and will continue to research and everything i have found links not only that product but a lot of products containing placenta to cancer bc it exposes the body to extra hormones. These hormones can cause breast development in toddlers and breast cancer.

Im gonna keep looking for evidence to the contrary but i have yet to find any

...im sad i really liked that product too.

Estrogen is what produces the long nails and stronger hair during pregnancy so I can see why they'd try to make a product for it. I did a little research and I found the same thing. Apparently the theory is that these estrogenic compounds found in products like these are in long-term uses, prone to cause breast cancer(too much of a good thing can be bad). This is a type of product that is mainly geared towards AA so it may be the reason why AA are almost 2x as likely to develop breast cancer than caucasians. Found this on wiki as well:

Quote:
Some hair shampoos on the market include estrogens and placental extracts; others contain phytoestrogens. There are case reports of young children developing breasts after exposure to these shampoos.[30] These products are often marketed to African-American consumers.[31]
On September 9, 1993, the FDA determined that not all topically-applied hormone-containing drug products for OTC human use are generally recognized as safe and effective and are misbranded. An accompanying proposed rule deals with cosmetics, concluding that any use of natural estrogens in a cosmetic product makes the product an unapproved new drug and that any cosmetic using the term "hormone" in the text of its labeling or in its ingredient statement makes an implied drug claim, subjecting such a product to regulatory action.[32]

In addition to being considered misbranded drugs, products claiming to contain placental extract may also be deemed to be misbranded cosmetics if the extract has been prepared from placentas from which the hormones and other biologically active substances have been removed and the extracted substance consists principally of protein. The FDA recommends that this substance be identified by a name other than "placental extract" and describing its composition more accurately because consumers associate the name "placental extract" with a therapeutic use of some biological activity.

I never ever used those products because (and no offense to anyone that did) but it was a duh factor. You take any little bit of placenta, I dont care from what part of the placenta or how much and put it in your hair? Knowing that the foundation of developing a baby is placenta and the foundation and viability of that placenta is HORMONE!

And it takes them (companies) so long to put two and two together and say we are pumping ladies (and some men) full of hormones?! Sometimes, the consumer is not going to put 2+2 together, and it is really up to the company to give them the full scoop on what they are using and its ludacris to think that they will get the whole picture.

I banned TCB products a long time ago, talking about they were using DNA in relaxers, and I banned placenta products a long time ago. That's why I have been wearing my hair natural and if I feel the need to have straight hair, I will flat iron that mess and I let natural oils (coconut, jojoba, etc) be my bff. No relaxers, no texturizers, no hair dye

aprill i never even thought about it....LOL i just discovered hask the other day and i was like "wow wonder why no one sings this products praises" now i know. I get my hair relaxed professionally do you know of any relaxers that PROFESSIONALS USE that contain estrogen? I know boxed brands do(read that too).

Why in the %#$#%E$ can a company get away with this...the strange thing is hask is aimed towards caucasian women bc on the box is a caucasian blonde. I didnt know about tcb? I quit using products aimed at AA long time ago bc of all the mineral oil and crappy ingredients they put in it so its garnier and olive oi for me.

Why would they put hormones in aa hair products. EVERYONES hair needs moisture and protein wouldnt it make more sense to use plant protein or animal protein like aphogee...OMG does aphogee contain hormones too? ~off to google~

What doesnt give you cancer? Dominican women use the same products as AA do and I dont see them stopping using Placenta products. I guess its good to be informed but idk i think everything we use has a potential to be harmful

Even the food we eat is pumped with crap. I dont know whats "safe" anymore.

It's like when the FDA proposed a ban hydroquinone bc it had cancer causing properties. I think it's banned overseas and in asian countries but I know here in the US 2% is available to the public. Like you mentioned Emily, it's just a matter of being informed of the possible risks as the FDA does not regulate everything that is put out like most people think. With the internet so easily available to many, it's not hard to research anything in question.

i would think that this would make the companies be more upfront. The thing that makes me the mnost leery is this info has been out for two yrs(again i hadnt heard of hask until last week lol) so hask had TWO YEARS to come up with their own study about this and do research and they havent.

My mama thinks that aa hair companies put things in there on purpse bc of racism...i think its just they are taking advantage of of a lot of aa not knowing whats good for our hair vs what isnt. Bottom line :quick and cheap money...shame on hask for not saying SOMETHING.

Actually it would be quite the opposite. A company that sells an item may cause cancer is not going to admit it. How are they going to make money then? These types of products have nothing to do with racism and has everything to do with selling. It is disgusting that companies sell something knowingly harmful but at the same time it's up to the consumer to figure out what exactly they're slathering on their bodies or consuming.

you know r right shame on the FDA for allowing this. I dont think racism is the key here bc hask has a caucasian woman on the front LOL. I think they allow a lot of things to slip by in aa hair products bc a lot of aa women dont know what to do with our hair. Now theres the internet but even when i was a teen there wasnt much info but now theres no excuse. Im glad this was broght to light. Now off to google my flinstone vitamines...oh adrienne ive been meaning to ask you what you use to line your eyes? I try to get mine like yours but i end uplooking like a racoon

....what do u use?

I just use gel or cream liners. In my avatar I used L'oreal's Hip cream liner but they dry too quickly so I have since then alternated between what gel liners I use. I have several but I've mainly been using Wet and Wild's cream liner. It works really well and I like it so far.
