Unhealthy Hair Suggestions?

Hello again! I'm wondering if I could get some suggestions on *something* to do with my hair. I have medium-thickness wavy/frizzy- as-all-getout hair that is currently dyed a medium red, original color is a dark blonde/plain brown. I don't dye often. I wash daily, though I started skipping shampoo a few months back and only condition unless I've gotten pretty nasty. I use Dove's color treated hair conditioner, sometimes follow up with their moisturizing spray. I don't style my hair often, just tend to be lazy and let it air dry unless I'm going somewhere.

What's driving me nuts is frizz and dryness. It doesn't look or feel healthy to me. I see lovely liquid waves on girls that are out and about and even when styling it just never looks like that.

What are your suggestions as far as improving the health of my hair? I want that liquid, healthy look so bad!

I guess, after looking around, that what I'm looking for is some kind of intensive treatment...

 
My hair is wavy and frizzy, though thicker and longer than yours, but you could try what I did when my hair was damaged.

I used Sebastian Light Weightless Shine shampoo and conditioner (washing my hair with cool water), and alternated between a pomade from Fructis or Sunsilk's Wave Envy for styling, avoiding hairspray (or anything with alcohol) altogether.

I massaged lemon oil or lavender oil in my hair (and scalp) every day, did a hot oil treatment with 100% pure jojoba oil every week, massaged an egg in my hair twice a week, and rinsed with apple cider vinegar once a week (like one tablespoon apple cider vinegar per 8 oz water).

Within a month, my hair had much more shine and was much more manageable (although it's very course, so still a little rough when it's not long).

I rave about using coconut nut as a pre treatment to washing hair.

There are a lot of threads praising coconut oil - use the search forum for more info.

You can also try palm oil, advocado oil or olive oil - all four have been chosen to penetrate the hair shaft and help strengthen hair. Oils like jojoba and mineral only do marginal jobs as they do not penetrate the hair shaft, to my knowledge.

Wash hair no more than twice a week. Always condition hair afterwards.

When you dye your hair, do not reapply new dye over previously dyed hair, only to the new growth.

 
i've noticed the coconut oil threads, and i've been trying to find where one would find it in stores. just plain coconut oil... grocery section of walmart?

Jojoba oil doesn't really penetrate, but that's not necessarily a bad thing.It seals in moisture and helps prevent breakage. To find pure coconut oil, try looking in Health Food Stores - I bought a 355 ml jar of pure cold-pressed virgin coconut oil for $12.

355 ml is close to 12 oz. Also, some muters have found coconut oil in hair care stores that cater to African Americans.

With regard to jojoba oil, if it works for you than go for it. I've tried it and I feel that coconut oil is superior.

But it sounds like jojoba oil might work really nice as a skin moisturizer - it doesn't clog pores where as coconut oil can.

 
You can try a light conditioner like C for Shine (yes to carrots), i have fine hair and it doesn't kill its volume. I second coconut oil, at least once a week, if not twice, i apply a generous amount on my lengths and wash my hair the next morning, and it helps a lot.

 
Do you deep condition? If not I would suggest you do that at least once a week.

Have you tried Herbal Essences None of Your Frizzness leave-in? If not you definitely should.

Another suggestion to help with the dryness, get a bottle of Rose Water from your local pharmacy and a bottle of food grade vegetable glycerin from Whole Foods or any health food store you have near you. If your Dove bottle is 8 oz, add an ounce of each to it and use as you normally would. Be sure you shake it well each time before you use it.
