So for the past few weeks, I'm 99.8% sure I have product buildup. My hair feels really gross. When I scratch my head during the day I get this white residue left in my nails. Same deal after I shower too. For the past week I've been using Giovanni's tea tree oil clarifying shampoo and conditioner but I have not noticed much of a difference.

Is it just the shampoo I'm using that's not making it go away? I even googled and tried using a bit of baking soda in my shampoo but that didn't work either.

Any recs on some good clarifying shampoo? I'll probably have to go to a salon to find something that willl work.

You can find great clarifying shampoos at a drugstore.

White Rain/Tame extra body

Suave and Tresemme make good ones

Look for a shampoo that is clarify, volumizing, balancing, oil control, or thickening.

These all tend to have a higher degree of cleansing agents and fewer conditioning agent.

Use a clarifying shampoo. It should work.

Your shampoo probably has moisturizing agents in it, that's why it doesn't work.

You can also do the baking soda thing separately. And try an apple cider vinegar rinse.

ACV or regular vinegar rinse.

The very first time I ever did one one, there was definite slimy run off on what I thought was clean hair- product buildup breaking away for the first time.

Now I do it and don't get that kind of result, of course, because I do it on a semi regular basis, so I have no product build up any more and with no build up, the products works better when I use them.

You do get shampoo that are specifically for removing product build up... I know that Gliss do one for that...

If one brand of clarifying shampoo didn't work for you, I think you should try another brand. Maybe you can consider using Paul Mitchell Shampoo Two or even Shampoo Three. Shampoo Two is more mild than Shampoo Three, because Shampoo Tree can even clarify your hair from chlorines build ups because of swimming and also any other cause of build ups. For the conditioner you can use the one that suits your hair type and condition.

Thanks for everyone's suggestions. I even told my hair dresser about my problem and she kindly rinsed my hair with a clarifying shampoo they had, unforunately did not work. I will try AVC and see if that works.

Can you purchase Paul Mitchell shampoo at the local drug store?

I guess the one I was using didn't work, I had high hopes for it though considering it had tee tree oil in it.

I got that residue crap after using head and shoulders and tresemme moisture conditioner. make sure to massage the scalp with your fingernails to cleanse any oil on the scalp and lift product away from it. Start using a shampoo for oily hair for a while.

Maybe try mixing a small amount of baking soda into your shampoo. Not into the bottle but sprinkled into the shampoo you are about to use.

at my work we have this product called malibu, it has a special shampoo that is just for product buildup.. i would be more than happy to get you this product if u are interested... plmk =]

You many not have used enough baking soda. I squeeze the usual amount of shampoo in my palm. Then I add a heaping teaspoon of baking soda. I mix it up in my palm with my finger and then work it through my hair. I leave it on for a few minutes to break up the gunk before rinsing. I do this 2 times. This always works for me.

I recommend Ion Purifying Solutions Clarifying Shampoo. I buy mine at Sally Beauty Supply. It's inexpensive and works really, really well for my hair. It can dry your hair out, so I'd limit using any clarifying shampoo to once or twice a week depending on your hair type. Mine tends to get oily, so I can get away with using it twice a week. Also, do you dye your hair? If so, make sure not to use a clarifying shampoo, even "color-safe" versions, soon after a coloring treatment as it can strip the dye from your hair shaft.
