I have been on a new medication for my migraines, but one of the side effects is loss of hair. I also got it colored and I know that hasn't helped the situation much. This medicine has caused my hair to thin out a lot. My ponytails are not even the size of a nickel. What can I do to get back some of the thickness? I am off the medicine now, because it was kinda scary seeing so much hair in the drain. I haven't shed this much in a long time! I thought about taking some hair and nail vitamins. Does anyone have any recommendations?

Have you tried talking to your doctor about switching meds as well? I know I was on Zomig, and it helped a lot!

Try checking into some supplements as Chelle mentioned, and maybe consult with your physician about products that might assist in hair growth as well...

Do some research on Saw Palmetto. It's a natural supplement that's normally used to treat male prostrate trouble. But it can also help with hair loss. I was shedding alot and have stopped since i've been taking this. Biotin is another thing you might want to supplement but the Saw Pametto is what will stop the hair loss and it's safe. My skin and nails are very healthy and it was just my hair that concerned me so I saw no need in taking hair/skin/nail combo supplements.

I would also maybe give your hair a break from the coloring and treat it very gently. Read your labels well and make sure your products aren't filled with lots of cones and alcohol.

I don't blame you for getting off the medicine. I would have too. Are you still having the migraines, though? I hope you're feeling better and can find something to help with the hair thinning. Believe me, I totally can empathize with your pain!

Nioxin makes shampoo and conditioner for thinning hair. also Redken anti-snap.

Thanks Lisa. I will look into the Saw Palmetto and Biotin. I still have the headaches, but I am having such a hard time adjusting to medicines. I have just stopped taking them because the side effects are not worth it.

Thanks! I will check those out!

I just switched medications to the one that makes my hair thin out. The medication is supposed to be a preventive medication that helps prevent the migraines from coming on. I don't do very well with those though and have horrible side effects. I will definitely have to talk to him about a different medication though. I take Zomig as well, but try to take it only if I really need it. I asked him about some recommendations when he was talking to me about the side effects. He said that he had no advice for what to do if my hair started to thin out.

My mom loves Nioxin products. My hair is fine and somewhat thin, but has a lot of natural curl so it looks really voluminous. However, when I wear it straight, I like to add some Pantene Thickening spray and that beefs it up quite a bit. I have also heard good things about Biotin and plan on taking some supplements soon as I'm trying for extra length.

Best of luck!!
