For those of you who have curly hair, how long did it take you to find a stylist that actually knew how to cut curly hair?!?

It seems like every time I go the stylist cuts my hair in a way that looks really good when it's blown out or flat ironed, but when it's curly it's a big poofy mess--right now I have mushroom hair going on. What's troubling is I always go in with how I prefer to wear my hair (down and curly) and I say that I always wear my hair curly and never straighten it. Then they still give me a haircut meant for straight hair. This is the fourth salon I've going to in a year.

I will say at least it's summer so wearing my hair up until it grows out a little more is no problem. And for a few years I went crazy constantly dyeing my hair with box hair dyes. It's finally all grown out and I now only have virgin hair. That means in a few months I can go to get professional highlights done and get my hair dyed the right way

Have you tried the Naturally Curly Web site? I forget where on the site, but they have reviews for salons. The forums would be a good place to try and find a good salon too.

I have never had my hair cut at a salon. It's easy enough for me to cut layers into my own hair, so that's what I do. I use this method. I do it in front of the mirror to be sure I am doing it right. I also will shorten the layers if I need to by then brushing my hair down and doing a straight cut across the back.

I second internetchik's recomendation for finding a saloon.

Also you may want to google saloons that are trained in either the curly girl or devachan method.

I have curly-wavy hair as well - like a 3a, if that helps.

I had my hair cut into long layers years ago and I will always continue to keep that style.

When my hair was longish and one length, I had that horrible triangle look.

Now it is so much easier to manage if I straighten it or let it dry naturally.

Thanks for the site info Letitia - I'm going to try cutting my own layers next time.

I know it kills you a bit inside to hand over the cash, but honestly, the best cuts I've ever had have been done by the real professionals.

I can't cut my own hair, been there, done that, got the awful pictures.

But I find that it's worth the money so be able to straighten my hair and have it look nice and leave my hair curly and have it settle nicely.

Most new hairdressers don't even have a clue what to do with curly hair, though the ITEC qualified hairdressers really know their stuff which is surprising for someone with less experience but amazing because it's cheaper for a good quality cut.

I was in the same boat as you. It seemed like my hair was only cut nicely when I went to an expensive salon (which I can't afford), so I cut it myself now. Never looked better (besides from that salon haha). I got tired of having my hair butchered. It's really not that difficult to cut. If you're afraid to yourself, you might want to ask recommendations from people you know who have curly hair, and see if a salon has someone who specializes with cutting curly hair.

Thanks. I went to the curly hair site mentioned and there are a couple salons in my area that seem like they actually know what to do. Right now, I'm going to grow it out--the stylist cut it too short last time.
