Hi. I was wondering if there's any way to lighten hair without damaging it. I've heard of lemon juice, but I don't know how well that'd work. My natural hair color is a dirty blonde, and I'm trying to grow it out... but the rest of my hair is dyed black. The blonde and the black don't look too good together, so I want to try and lighten it up as much as I can without re-dying it. I'm definitely letting it grow out the rest of the way, but I just wanted to know if there was away to lighten it up in the meantime. All suggestions/comments are helpful, thanks in advance! =D

Since your hair is partly black lemon juice is probably not going to turn out too good. From my experience the only time it works is if your hair is already blonde and your trying to perk it up a bit.

If you want to do it, your probably going to have to bleach it. Depending on how light you want it, there are some colors made specifically for dark hair that are called "high lift formulas" which will get dark hair lifted a few levels without bleaching. But you aren't gonna get to a light blonde or anything like that. I always recommend going to a salon because it's very easy for you to mess up, but if you want to do it yourself, go to Sally Beauty Supply, or something similar. And tell them what you're wanting to do, and ask them about the high lift colors, etc. They'll point you in the right direction and help you out with all the stuff you need. Bleach/color, developer, tools, etc.

You can either do it in stages, lightening a little bit more as you go...or full on bleach it and then you may need to put a new color/toner on after that.

That being said, there really is no way to lighten or color permanently without a little damage. But if you pamper your hair, it can look just as healthy as before you do it. You want to condition well, don't over process, etc.

I would also like to mention, if you decide to do this yourself, since the top of your hair is lighter than the bottom, you won't leave the stuff on that part as long. You can wipe the bleach or whatever off at like 5-10 minute intervals untill you get the result you are looking for.

Oh and another thing you could do, if you're totally scared of the whole lightening thing, but don't like the two-toned contrast of the blonde/black while you're trying to get there. You can by semi permanent hair colors that last a few weeks or color rinses that wash out the next time you wash your hair. They don't lighten your hair, but they darken. you could use one of these on your roots untill the black grows out.

I think Lemon juice would be good for you to use, just mix it with a bit of honey so that the lemon doesn't dry out your hair too much.

lemon juice will lighten your hair, but it is also super damaging.

infact it is more so than bleach, because the cuticule is forced to remain open with lemon juice so it can react with the sun to lighten.

If you really want to go lighter the easiest way is with hair dye, you should be fine as long as you have not died your hair before. it should lighten your hair just fine.

The only problem is I have dyed my hair before. I dyed it black and now my blonde is growing back in. I'm trying to grow my natural hair out, but I want to lighten the black so it doesn't look so dramatic. My roots are like 2 inches of blonde and then black. I think I might just bleach it and dye it blonde instead.

no there's no way to lighten hair that much without damaging it. there's this hair color remover stuff that is supposed to take out dye in hair, but its damaging and doesn't work too well. to lift hair from black to blonde you have to bleach it.

I haven't tried it myself because I've never dyed my hair but I've heard lots of good reviews on a hair forum I'm on.
I'd also recommend not doing the lemon juice. It only lightens the hair because it acts as a mild bleach so it would create the damage as just using bleach.

a color fix wont work at this point since it prob has been about 4 months since you dyed your hair black...

i would eitehr recomend going to the salon to get them bleached out....

or if it was a box brand dye from the store you can get it to lighten a little bit if you dye your hair (not any where close to your natural color but prob somewhere around a medium brown with out bleach).

but really the best bet based on my previous experiance trying to go from a deep red, back to blonde (i did this two times and tried it two diffrent ways) would be just to wait it out or get highlights to break up some of the black and than wait it out.

Yeah, it's been about 4 months. It was a box-dye, so if I was to dye it again, should I dye it a light blonde? Would that work the best to make it lightest?

the best way to do it would be just to dye it. you could do a light blonde & it will help make it less dramatic looking. or you could dye your whole head a color similar to your natural color, yet you'd still have too contrasting shades. this is a toughie!

Thanks... I think I'm going to go and get it done professionally. Have them bleach it and dye it blonde as close to my natural color as possible. Then when it grows out it won't look too different.
