I need a makeover but what color?

I have never colored my hair so I am new to this but I really feel like I need a change. I dont know if I should start with highlights or just do an all over color. Here is a pic, hope you girls can see it and maybe get an idea of what I should do. Basically its very long and dark brown with lomg layers in the back and layers starting as bangs in the front all the way down.

I love dark hair with red highlights! A friend of mine has it done, she didn't overdo it, but it looks so exotic

Nope, here are really fine and thin.

Some deep copper or carmel highlights would be nice. Nothing chunky, just thin, strategically placed streaks throughout your hair. Highlighted hair looks best when the face is framed with a bit heavier highlight.
