I have been on accutane twice. The first time I was 35 and I was on for 4 months. Before starting accutane and each month following, I did fasting blood work and a pregnancy test. Accutane can cause cholesterol to rise and can cause sever bith defects. The doctor will stop the accutane if you become pregnant. I went on accutane again a year later, for 5 months. The doctor calculates your weight and blood to determine the length of duration and strength of accutane so everyone can be slightly different.
As far as side effects, my skin and scalp lost all oil about a month into the treatment. I loved that but you might start using moisturizer. My lips and nose were dried out so my lips would cracked or my nose bled a little bit. Just use lots of vaseline on lips and nostrils to prevent these problems.
My eyes were always dry so I had to stop wearing contacts while on accutane.
And my night vision decreased dramatically so I let others drive, in the evening.
So there are a few side effects but the results are really worth it. I went on it the second time only because the oiliness came back and I started to have a few large breakouts around my jaw again.
And if it is too expensive, the pharmaceutical company the manufactures accutane might help pay for some/all of the cost depending on your finances.
Just remember, you are not committed to staying on for the duration. If you start and then decide to stop after a few weeks or months, your doctor will agree to that.
Ask your doctor about a sample of Neo Medrol. It is the only topical ointment that works for me. Take care
