So you just spent $200 in the salon getting your colour done...but 3 weeks later your colour has faded! Here are some tips I give my clients to help pro-long the life of their new colour...

1. Don't have a ton of product in the hair when getting your colour done; since products (gel's, waxes, pastes) coat the hair, the colour has a harder time adhereing to each strand. If you must use product, opt for a light hair spray...it's only one day, I'm sure you can live without all that product in your hair

2. Treat your hair with protein BEFORE getting your new colour done; proteins fill the voids in the hair that are/were damaged. If you fill the voids prior to getting the colour done, the color has a much better chance to adhere to the hair

3. After getting your colour done wait ATLEAST 24-48 hours before shampooing; The colour process doesn't stop once you leave the salon. Hair colour continues to deposit and penetrate the cuticle for 24-48 hours after a colour service is complete. If you wash your hair any sooner, you are essentially washing away the $200 you just spent at the salon!

4. Wash in cool water; I know its not comfortale so if you must, use luke-warm water. Hot water opens the cuticle of the hair and lets colour slide right out...stay away from hot water!

5. Use sunscreen to protect your hair colour! We use sunscreen on our skin, but seemingly forget about our hair. There are a ton of lines that offer 'hair screen'. Alternatively, a lot of styling products like flat iron protectors and serums, have UVA filters built into them..read your products ladies!!

6. Getting your hair coloured in a salon is an investment...that being said, you should want to protect your investment once you leave the salon. Have your stylist reccomed a good colour preserving shampoo and conditioner, after all, what was the point in getting your hair coloured in the first place if you had no intentions of protecting your investment? Seems pretty silly to me!

7. Stay away from Chlorine! Chlorine is a type of bleach; it will discolour your hair and leave it with an unattractive tinge.

8. If you went from a blonde to a darker colour, or have a red tone, consider using a colour enhancing shampoo system. Everytime you wash, you are depositing colour back into the hair. Be warned though, do not use colour enhancing products if you only have highlights...it can alter the base colour of your hair.

9. If you are an avid heat-tools user (blow dryer, flat iron etc) use a heat protector....heat is probably the quickest way to fade hair colour....putting a protective shield on the hair before applying heat will make the world of a difference!

Hope this helps!

I like the idea of treating my hair with protein, before colouring.

I don't have a Sally's around here - where would I purchase the protein and what brand do you recommend?

Thanks

We'll I have a sallys around here but I never browsed around through there products, but do you know any brands of protein fillers that are good to treat your hair with? & what are some good shampoos that keep color in?

I diy my hair red and always use shampoo for red hair.

And use the proteincure from Nicky Frieda Blond edition before diying.

I thought you lived In Toronto? Guess I was wrong, cause theres TONS of sallys in the GTA. You can go to Chatters, Beauty Supply Outlet, Beauty Express....they'll all generally have the same type products. I always tell my clients to use Redken Extreme Cat Treatment. It comes in a spray as opposed to a cream; the spray aspect of the product lets you target the exact areas that you need it the most. Wash your hair, gently squeez out excess water so your hair is not dripping wet, spray product into hair focusing on the ends and anywhere else damage is, comb it though, wait 3-5 mins and rinse. I would do this the day before you go to get your colour done. Here's a link to the Redken Website; You can take a look at the product.http://www.redken.ca

Again, I would go with the above mentioned product, I find it works the best and really helps the hair grip the colour. My favourite shampoo for locking in colour is Hempz Colour Preserve. It has UV inhibitors and is Sulfate free, it also has the added benefit of building a protective barrier against thermal heat on the hair. Hempz ~ A Higher State of Hair Care

with mine i just usually stay away from Sodium Lauryl/Laureth Sulfafte, that is one devil of an ingredient used in a ton of shampoo's i was shocked about how much they fade hair color! and i also use repairing conditioner along with hair product/heat protectant when i iron my hair,it saves my color and repairs my hair ,and it leaves a nice shine to it.

Great tips! Thanks for posting!

I always try and blast my hair with cold water before I get out of the shower cos I couldn't stand in a cold shower so I just switch it on cold and then leave it like that for a minute or so then jump out cos I'm freezing cold lol

lol cold water baths= sucky. but try washing your hair in cold water(shower) n keep your body kinda away. wrap your hair up. then put on the hot water for your body. a little time consuming. but its better than color fading and cold bodies?lol
