I need to get a hair cut soon. In my past experiences, I always walk into the hair salon with a style in my mind, and walk out with something completely different. A lot of people I know also experience this.

How do you make sure the hair dresser knows exactly what you want? I even bring in pictures of the hair styles I want, but it didnt help.

Also, are there any good salons to get a good hair cut - something that is like a chain all over the US? The ones I've been to are not worth mentioning.

For me it's been a lot of trial and error, but I always make sure to bring pictures of what I want as well as examples of what I don't want, then kind of explain how my hair behaves, how I style it, etc. You have to be vocal about what you want, otherwise you'll walk out crying. For example, when I got sideswept bangs a couple of years ago, I told my stylist that I wasn't sure if it'd look that great on me, so could she cut them long to begin with and then we'll see if I can go shorter. We ended up cutting a couple of times to get the length right.

Speak up if things are going in a direction you're not liking; if something looks odd, point it out; ask questions about what he/she's doing.

As far as finding a good one, ask your friends/coworkers/complete strangers with good hair where they get theirs cut. Good luck!

Fantastic Sam's is good... JC Penney and Sears salons are good... I've learned, sometimes if you see someone with a style you want, to ask the person where they get their hair done and who does it. You probably have a pretty good bet that way. Otherwise, I recommend getting a magazine that not only shows pics, but describes HOW the cut is done.

I have found most Aveda salons to be a great experience all around...and I stay away from the chains in the malls.

i dont have any advice since im always walking out crying. haha, but thanks for the tips above, i will try them out!

From my experience, it's good to try some people out and find a fave...unfortunately for me as soon as I find someone to stick with to cut my hair, they have a baby and quit doing it! GRR! But don't be afraid to tell them that's not what you had in mind. When they're done and ask if you like it...just politely say "that's not exactly the style that is in the picture I brought....can you shorten it/add layers/whatever"
