My hair is getting pretty long but I want to try to grow it another 2-3 inches for summer. I know regular trims are important to maintain health but how often should I be trimming if I'm trying to grow it out? Also, what is considered a trim? 1/2 inch? Inch?

My hair grows 1/2 inch per month. When I want to let it grow long, I cut it every three months and get 1/2 inch trimmed off.

Therefore, it grows 1 inch every 3 months or 4 inches a year, and remains very healthy as it lengthens.

Hope this helps

"Supposedly" you are supposed to get it trimmed every 4 to 6 weeks to get rid of split ends. I don't believe in that theory at all. Besides that, getting your hair cut that often can get spendy. Usually when you get a trim you can tell them you want about 1/2 inch off. Hope this helps! Good luck.

i'd just get a 1/2 off every 2 months. i dont really follow the 4-6 weeks theory either. massage your scalp when you shampoo. and use a good protein filled conditioner. i really like tresemme's products. they contain lots of vitamins which help it grow. if you do a search i'm sure you'll find lots more tips.

I haven't had my hair cut in over a year (I'm trying to grow it really long). What I do is just search through the hair for any split ends and snip them off with a pair of sharp scissors (which I don't use for anything else as it would blunt them). I find that there are very few splits at the bottom of my hair anyway and not that I have many but when I do they tend to be on shorter hairs (which I guess are ones I broke) which a trim wouldn't get rid of anyway. So if you have the patience and don't want to sacrifice any growth then I'd recommend it.

I haven't had my hair cut in almost 4 years. The only thing I do for my hair is washing it (which is such a chore for me) with some generic brand of shampoo and conditioner every few days when it gets greasy. It reaches the middle of my back and I have no problems with split ends.

I haven't had my hair cut since my son was a month old ( i needed to freshen up lol) and he'll be 3 in august. hmm...i need a trim...but i still don't have any split ends at all and my hair looks extremely healthy. i do shampoo and condition every other day but i have only use a curling iron and hair dryer once (when the stylist cut it and styled it). I let my hair air dry and it has no probs to this day.

my hair grows ultra fast! around 1 cm every 3 weeks

I have to dye it often cause I dye it light blonde so it's noticeable, my natural color is light brown.

I usually go and trim it every 2 months, something like that. My hairdresser knows when it's time, and she cuts only 2 cm, thats almost 1 inch.

Tha's actually a pretty normal growth rate. I grow half an inch a month which is almost 1cm/3 weeks and it's considered pretty much the average growth rate for most people. I know people who grow 1 inch a month - That's unusually fast!
I think it is maybe more noticable because you can see the growth because of the dye. I don't dye my hair so I have to measure or else I'd never notice!

My hair has grew less than a 1/2 in. in 3 months. Is this unusual, am I doing something wrong? I keep up with how much it grows because it's hilighted. I'm trying to not use and heat on it from now on because I think that is frying it.

It could be a natural stall, which do happen particularly I've heard of a lot of people stalling around waist-length (I'm not sure how long your hair is), or it could be the ends breaking off from damage. Do you have lots of split ends because the could indicate the latter?
BTW, I go a lot to this forum (forums.longhaircommunity.com) where there's lots of useful info and people more knowledgable than me! Someone there might be able to give you a better answer

My feeling is you should get your cut at least every 3 to 6 months if your growing your hair long. It does help keep the ends from getting broken and helps when you do go and get a cut so you don't need a couple of inches - that you don't want - cut off. Not everyones hair is the same, and depends on how good you care for your hair while you are growing it long as to when you need to have it cut.

i only do a big cut like an inch (thats big for me!) just once a year, the rest of the time i just cut the split ends off or if it gets really uneven i do a dusting myself cutting just a teeny bit off, my hair grows 1.5" a month. I take kelp and multi vits which has also help in speeding my growth which used to be 1/2" a month.

yes this is a good site with great info but i havent registered as i find it a bit too cliquey. They dont seem to like newbies much.
I have also read that hair stalls at waist for some too, wonder why this is?
