I have never had dandruff before, but I am guessing because of the combination of the winter and dry weather, my scalp has been so itchy and dry.
I am going to the pharmacy tomorrow and was going to pick up one of those anti-dandruff shampoos. Does any one have a good/bad experience with any of them?

Head and shoulders shampoo works for me.  I only use it once or 2x to get rid of the flakes then I go back to my regular hair care.  I get dandruff on occasion, after I dye my hair.

have you tried making your own hair masks? Google hair masks, I believe avocado helps. But google it, I used hair masks and gave my ugly hair...become less ugly. haha

I 2nd the head&shoulders. If that doesnt work, get some Nizoral. it comes in a blue bottle, it's with the dandruff shampoos.

Many years ago I trained in pharmacy. First thing you need is a diagnosis - dandruff is actually a symptom and can be caused by seborrhoeic dermatitis (yeast infection AKA greasy dandruff), contact dermatitis (product allergy or irritation), regular dry skin or a rarer skin/ health condition. Each condition responds to a different treatment - Head and Shoulders is a poor quality commercial shampoo and causes or worsens as many cases of dandruff as it resolves. Nizoral is highly effective on seborrhoeic dermatitis but may add to the irritation of contact dermatitis or dry scalp as it is a prescription strength anti-fungal.

IF the problem is simply dryness switch to a gentle sulphate-free shampoo such as Everpure or Eversleek, and switch your silicone-heavy conditioner to an oil-based one such as Fructis Triple Nutrition, being sure to condition your scalp as well as hair. Avoid styling products containing silicones, alcohol or other irritants, do not use a hairdryer near your scalp. Also consider whether you are consistently meeting or exceeding ALL your government's recommendations for healthy eating, particularly oily fish and other healthy fats, sugar and white/ refined carbs. Lastly DO NOT SCRATCH or you will get stuck in the itch-scratch cycle: instead use cold compresses to relieve the itching.

If that does not work you have misdiagnosed yourself with a dry scalp, you probably have the far more common SD!

Fantastic reply Firefox7275!

If you're still looking, Piper212, for an anti-dandruff shampoo try the new on by Suave Professionals. It can be found at Walgreens and RiteAid. I think the price was $3.99 each at Walgreens. I bought it for my daughter, and I keep meaning to do a review on it, because she too had dandruff this past winter. In the last week-ish she's been using it the dandruff has cleared up and her scalp no longer smells oily or musty (I'm thinking she had/has seborrhoeic dermatitis due to the smell) .

I don't know if it will but my daughter has been using it for well over a week now and no more dandruff. If she discontinues using it I'm not sure if dandruff will return or not.

Hi, you may want to try this recipe for treating dandruff.

Ginger Dandruff Treatment

Ingredients
Ginger root
1 teaspoon organic sesame oil
1 teaspoon lemon juice

Directions
Squeeze ginger root through press to obtain one tablespoon of juice. Mix all ingredients. Apply to scalp and let dry before shampooing. Repeat three times a week.

Hope this help!

I have eczema, so my problem is not the same, but I always find success using the TGel/TSal products. I use it maybe twice a week. And when my hair is freshly colored I use Pureology's dandruff shampoo.  It is the best and won't fade your color while treating the dandruff.  I'm not sure if they still make it, I have a liter from a few years ago that has lasted me forever.

Before Some year ago i also have dandruff an i have tried the following shampoos and i got result. you also use that shampoos.

Head and Shoulders
Selsen Blue
T-Gel
Tea Tree based product
Lavender based product
Multiple prescription shampoos and conditioners

Rinse with apple cider vinger before you get out of the shower. once your hair is dry you can't smell the vinegar. and rinse with cold water.

Diet plays an important role in the treatment of dandruff. To begin with, the patient should resort to an all-fruit diet for about five days and take three meals a day of juicy fruits. After the all-fruit diet, the patient can gradually adopt a well-balanced diet, with emphasis on raw foods, especially fresh fruits and vegetables.

This thread has a great range of ideas for treating dandruff! I don't get it often, but I will keep these methods in mind when it does occur. I usually use Head and Shoulders to fix the problem.
