I have the heart of a scientist - i like to test things and mixtures and see what happens. Since my hair is desperately dry these past weeks/months (bad choice of shampoo/conditioner and lots of chemical on my hair), i was searching for anything cheap that would help it to recover.

So I'm gonna post my latest hair experiments and tell you what happened. The first one:

Experiment #1: The Coconut Milk

Well so i read on the internet that coconut milk did wonders for the hair - moisturizing and yadda yadda. So, i thought - why don't i try it? It's so cheap, it might work.

Ok, so i bought the best brand available here and went to try on my hair. But i didn't count on something: THE SMELL! I absolutely HATE the coconut smell - and staying covered on runny coconut milk wasnt the best idea - i managed to keep the coconut milk for 30 minutes and i was almost puking when i took it off.

At least, i imagined, my hair would get soft... But it was hard - since i just put the liquid on my hair, it wasn't with the slip that a conditioner gives - and heavy. Very heavy - i was afraid it would look oily when it'd dry.

And I wanted so much to remove any trace of that awful coconut smell that I immediately washed it with conditioner and after with shampoo...

What i got: dry hair as usual and a faint smell of cheap coconut soap on my hair (those that people use to wash their clothes)

So, my conclusion was: at least to me, coconut milk was a bad choice.

Experiment #2: Avocados... Yumm

The internet, again! That evil little creature - i read that avocados were good for the hair, specially mixed with honey or olive oil... But since the last experience, i learned that i shouldn't use anything i don't like its smell on my hair, so i wouldn't feel sick of it. So, i discarted the olive oil (i like it on the food, i hate its smell), but i didn't have any honey, so i didn't use it. It was just avocado and some hair conditioner - at least i really like the avocado smell.

I mashed half an avocado (it was too much, i admit - i used what was left as a cream for the body - i should used a 1/4 of an avocado) with some conditioner and a little bit of water on the blender until it became like a thick conditioner, washed my hair with shampoo and then put on a lot on my hair until every piece of my hair was covered and green (LOL). It was A LOT of avocado

Then i spent 40/45 min (i was playing , so i don't know really) with it and a shower cap on my head (prevents leakage) and then i took it off and used a bit of conditioner on my hair just to untangle it and remove the tiny bits of avocado that could have stayed.

When my hair dried, wow - shiny and soft hair, and it doesn't look like a dry mess anymore! Yay! And a subtle smell of natural avocados, since they don't have a overpowering smell like coconut.

That experience i liked!

Wow that was very interesting

Thanks for sharing Lia, I rememeber I did the avocado experiment when I was 10 years old, lol, actually it wasn't an experiment, my mom had an oooold oooold cosmetology book with many natural recipes for the hair and face (masks), I think I used to rinse my hair with parsley water for shine and chamomile for... I forgot what that was for lol

i do the avocado thing when my avocados start turning!!! waste not want not.

also- you should try warm olive oil. i use regular cheap brand olive oil- not the virgin or extra virgin, or else you smell like dinner. i mix in an essential oil or two (orange blends well with olive oil; peppermint, australian tea tree and bergamot work to help stimulate the scalp as well)

cool ! i must say i'm the contrary : i hate avocados (both texture and smell) but i love coconut and olive oil. i didn't try coconut milk on my hair though, i keep it to make pina coladas with pineapple juice

but (actually i've just braided my hair after i put a lot of olive oil on it) the olive smell disappears quickly, and it disappears even more quickly when you mix it with coconut oil.

I have tried the Avocado several times in my teenage years......maybe since my hair is still dry i should try this again

This is definitely an inspiration....thanks

Very cool, thanks for sharing.

Question for the ladies that have tried the olive oil? How long do you leave it in, and when you wash it out is there a oily residue?
