Ok, so for a while I have been tossing around the idea of red hair...and I mean RED. Rich and intense, not so much bright as intense. My question is, how hard would it be to get my hair this way and how nightmarish would the upkeep be? Would I have to bleach my hair first, bc I really don't want to ruin my hair but I really do love this color...

i think it would great on you! red is a hard color to maintain, no matter the shade, but for a RED red, not found in nature red, i think you might have to bleach first.

have you thought about trying any of the manic panic colors?

I truly love that color! That's about the color I want my hair to be! OMG! I think something a little more auburn would be better on you... Like how Sharon Osborne's hair was/is. Red is the hardest color to keep, and since you have naturally dark hair, it might take a bit more upkeep than normal. I don't think you'll have to bleach it first, but I could be totally wrong. Most salons want you to wait 1-2 weeks between bleaching (if they're smart). Also, the bleaching part can be tricky IMHO in making sure your hair actually turns blonde not brassy looking first. They might be able to just use a volumizer to make the color more vibrant though. Be sure to post pics if you do it!

I honestly haven't looked into ANYTHING for it... I would want to go to a salon for the red I think... if it were something dark I would consider trying it at home, but since it is red, I would feel more comfy going to a pro.

But if I end up doing it you know I'll post pics!

a few years back i went red and my natural color is dark as yours i didnt have to bleach it but it faded very quick i was doing it every six weeks and that ruien my hair i had to cut it all off and start over now it's longer than befor but red is high mantinance color the color fades quicker than any other hope that helps

I always dye my hair red. I've tried so many different shades and depths of red. Red is very hard to maintain, and it also doesn't last long. It all depends on the hair dye your using. My best experience was with L'Oreal professional. I got it done professionally, and the stylist was awesome...she totally understood what i wanted. I have dark hair so she made sure she used a very light shade of red so that it would show up on my hair without the need for bleach. I don't think you should use bleach because it makes the red fade out faster and when it does it becomes copperish (which i hate!). I've tried Matrix too and other brands and L'Oreal professional was the best, and it lasted for such a long time, and it faded into a beautiful, more subtle red color.

I recently tried matrix (see my profile pic) and i was so disappointed, it faded after literally one wash

I think red would look great on you though, definitely give it a shot! and be careful to always use a dark towel when you wash your hair!

Red hair...hm it depends on the person. But I could imagine you with it easily. I think it will suit you, and the red color in those pics are great! It's a big step though, but I think you should do it!

I dyed my hair red recently, and it looked great - my friend actually said that i looked like Phoenix from Xmen 3 , but i dyed it with a brazilian brand color. I think that it can look great on you, but you have to be careful in order to not happened what it happened to me the 1st time i dyed my hair , it faded too quickly to a rusty color that was extremely strange

I love reds.... they're very exotic looking --- especially the vibrant cinnamons and cranberrys...

They are somewhat more difficult to upkeep that other shades, especially if your natural color is drastically different than the color you dye it (roots) It can fade quickly, and depending on how dark your hair is to start with, depends on the shade and the volume of peroxide they'll need to get the color to show. There are additives out there that they can mix with the dye to make it more vibrant and to help cancel out any other tones that might alter the results... I love it.... and I think it'd look good on you!

Is there any specific line you'd recommend? I am thinking if I am going to do it, there is a Paul Mitchell salon that I may go to for it bc they seem really knowledgeable. And do you think that Bana's result of not having to bleach the hair first would work? (BC I really like the idea of not having to bleach and then color!)

Well, If you're going to go to Paul Mitchell's salon, they'll use one of their colors, and probably decide which one after looking at your hair and giving you a consultation... Unless your hair is SUPER dark, you usually don't have to do a double process and can get it to show up well with just the developer... depends on how much lift you need.

Red hair is rare and very beautiful. I love the chick on will and grace last seasons hair color. Ask the lady on when you have to come back for retouch. And take a picture with you. When red starts to fade away it looks really orangey. Perhaps you can get henna to get that color.

The upkeep is not that bad for me as I have really dark roots, so I can usually go about 6-8 weeks before I touch up. I use color protecting shampoo/condtioner and once every two weeks I use a color depositing conditioner. I have never BLEACHED my hair to achieve my red results. I've attached some pics to show you what it looks like(they are kinda dorky, I know, but you get the gist!).I always have people stopping me to ask what color/where I get it done, too_Oh, and I do my hair myself, so it doesn't cost much. Best of Luck!
Ps. this is totally unrelated-Being a redhead ROCKS! Do it! LOL!

That color is gorgeous and I think it would look great on you, Leila. But red does fade rather quickly. If you decide to do it, I would definitely go to a professional and make sure you use some really good color protective shampoo and conditioner, washing it as little as possible. I had my hair dyed that color once and it just didn't come out the way I had hoped it would. Let us know what you decide to do and should you do it, we would all love to see pics.

Thanks guys! I think I will go for it but in phases... I am thinking to highlight with it first to make sure we can get the right color, then if I like it, do the underside half of my hair with it, THEN maybe color the whole head.

I think if I do it straight out all over my head, it will be too much of a shock and I may not like it. Too I want to make sure I can get the right color with minimal retardedness in looks...

i like you Leila LOVE RED hair.. and I like you have dark hair. When I went red she didn't bleach my hair. The color stays nice maybe 2 weeks.. But maintaining it is a b**ch and a half. The color fades very fast and then it looks dull and a lighter brown color. You will love the red but be prepared to keep maintaining it every 3-4 weeks, which could be a pain.

i would defiantely say go to a salon, because they might not have to bleach, but im not sure! just make sure to print out those pix and take them with you!

i had my hair that color when i lived in boston, omg i paid 275 for my hair, but it was SOOOOO worth it, i got highlights as well, and ahh it was gorgeous, with your olive tone, i think it would look dynamite!
