Hey, I was looking at a spa menu, and one of the procedures listed is ear candling. I had no clue as to what this was, so I used my handy dandy search engine and came up with this:

"Ear candling, also called ear coning, is a folk medicine practice intended to remove earwax and 'toxins' from a person's ear by means of a hollow candle placed in the ear. Ear candling has shown to be ineffective at creating a vacuum and removing impurities from the ear, and has resulted in injuries."

I was wondering if any of you had tried this and what the outcome was.

Oh yes, I have tried this - you would be amazed how good you feel after - but maybe that's just me!! You just have to make sure that it is done right and with a good quality cone, or yes, it can turn into a problem!

Good luck!

wow! you learn something new every day. i've never heard of that in my life. how cool.

The risk vs. reward on ear candling really isnt worth it. You can have candle wax fall INSIDE your ear, as well as particles from the candle.

Youre probably better off going to an actual doctor and just having earwax flushed out with water. I have that done often and its safe

Yep - make SURE the person who's doing it knows what he/she is doing. If done incorrectly, there could be permanent damage done to your ears

I had my ears candled about 10 years ago. I was seeing an Irridologist at the time and she recommended it. I have purchased the ear candles at health food stores many times over the years and done my familes ears. It's funny that you brought this up because I just bought some this weekend to do Chris' ears but haven't gotten around to it yet. It's amazing how well it works and I much prefer this over having my ears flooded with water at the doctor's office. I hate that feeling and it leaves my ears fuzzy for a long time afterwards. The ear candling is much more comfortable and even relaxing! I agree that you should have someone that knows how to properly preform it but it's actually fairly easy to do. Also you should never have it done if you have a sinus infection because it can pull it into the ears.

I've never had it done. I have such funky ears and sinus issues that I really don't think it's for me.

I've done it to my daughter a few times.......she says it feels way better after....she's pretty waxy.

be sure to cover the whole head with a towel so as not to burn or anything like that.....it's not and actual candle so there's no wax per say to melt.

Definitely interesting! Although, I must say....toxins in the ears? What's next? Toxins, toxins everywhere! I don't know that I'd ever do this, but thanks for sharing!

I do it every couple of months because the wax in my ears builds up in my ears quickly. It is very relaxing.

I have wondered about this for a long time. I have to go to a Dr. to get my ears cleaned, once or twice a year. I don't think I could bring myself to have it done. Thanks for the info though.

I have done ear candling and yes it made me feel so good after. My hearing was pretty poor before I tried it. So I thought why not give it a shot and was amazed that it helped me hear better after one session. I was also showed the ear wax that got "sucked" out. That was quite a lot of dirt! It's very gross and unbelievable that all of that came from inside my ear! To be safe, make sure to get someone who knows how to do it right to avoid any mishaps. =)

This was something my husband and I were into years ago. We did it ourselves. Our ears did feel wonderful afterwards! Hmmmm... maybe I'll go to the health food store and pick up a few ear candles today, it's been a while!

I used to have my ears irrigated at the doctor's twice a year, but he told me to start using Debrox and a rubber bulb ear syringe and since then (about 6 years ago) I haven't had to have it done. I have an overactive wax factory in my ear LMAO and they drive me nuts if I don't irrigate them myself at least once every 2 weeks. I have never done ear candling, but I have wanted to try it.

I want to try this. My ears have been clogged EVERY morning for the past few weeks (it pops a few minutes later but still).

haven´t tried it personally but we researched on this for a class. we found very little scientific literature on this but the overall message was that the procedure´s risks outway the few benefits.

the ear is pretty much a self cleaning organ so the removal of "toxins" is not necessary, if cleaning is necessary (if there´s too much ear wax) it´s better to get it done by a doctor.

I´ve seen this being done on TV and I agree it looked kinda neat cause all the stuff came out but I doubt it has the same results on everybody. I guess this is more of a "mental relief" to think that your ears are squeaky clean now, there´s barely any health benefit to it
