Good question. Also how long does it have to be? My bf wants to donate his hair to cancer patients as well.

i donated my hair. as long as its not colored its fine. i had 4 chunks of blonde highlights. she kept that seperate and cut the rest. i had loooong hair but she only took 12 inches and it really isnt that much. just make sure the person cutting it for you is really going to send it to locks of love. or just cut it yourself and send it in. some people sell it. and for 12 inches of hair you can get a lot of money. so be careful who you give it to!!

Donated mine last year just before start of my freshman year. Its fine for it to be dyed as long as it isn't bleached. They need 10 inches.

That sucks....I was gonna donate mine as soon as i work up enough courage to cut it (it's down to the top of my butt) but my hair is highlighted:(. What about gray hair. My husband has longish hair but it has some gray in it. I've been trying to get him to cut his hair. I think he would do it if he could donate it.

Hi JessyAnn

I don't see why naturally grey would be a problem. Wigs are made of all colours to suit everyone. Since your hair is only highlighted, maybe the hairdresser can separate the natural hair.

It's nice to hear you and hubby are thinking of donating.

I worked at a cancer centre and I can tell you that the patients are thrilled to have hair pieces until their own hair grows back.

Yes your hair does have to be natural to donate it and be at least 10 inches.

Are you thinking about Locks of Love? I would do some research on that as I've been hearing bad things about them such as them selling the hair and not using it for cancer patients. Not something I was impressed by.

Everything I've heard up until this thread was dyed hair was ok and it had to be eight inches. If you're really interested try finding a salon in your hair that does hair donations and ask them.

i donated 2 feet of hair about 2 years ago? i never dye my hair, so it was natural. also, the salon didn't donate it. they put it in a special bag with an address label and i had to send it into locks of love myself. =]

i had to donate AT LEAST 10 inches.

my 11 year old donated her hair to locks of love. I was so proud of her! she had such pretty hair too. It kept getting tangled and she hated it, so i'm glad someone else got it that needed it more. We didn't send ours in, she collects so many a week then sends them in all at once. my mother in law said they send you something in the mail, a piece of paper or something if you send it yourself. My daughter donated about 25in.

I have been doing research on this for myself I remember reading that no grey hair and the hair can't be bleach but can be dyed. I am out of the donating game which I think is a bit weird. they have to belach out the hair anayway before they process it!!!!

Go figure!!!

My uncle cut of his long hair and donated it! It was so special! I wish I had long enough hair to do it, but my hair is dyedd anyway. =(

my sister gave her hair to lmake a wig for her 2 year old niece who has alopecia. It can be coloured but not bleached. i think all you who have done so, are so kind hearted, it really makes a difference.
