So, some of you have seen pictures of what I look like..for those that havent, I have a deep red base with bright red highlights...I'm also a hairstylist by trade.

Red has kinda been my signature look for years now...everyone comments on how great it looks and wants to know how to get the look...I know I suit the red shades, but I'm just sooo sick of it. I had a bad break up earlier this year, decided to re-invent myself (for me of course not for anyone else) and have lost 30+lbs and 45 inches so far. I just think its time for a change!

Heres where the trouble lies....ideally I would like a medium brown that is a gold/beige base with lots of thin beige blonde highlights. Of course its achievable, its just getting there thats the problem. Becuase my hair is so red, and to keep it red, I use direct pigement on my hair...meaning its not colour i have to mix with developer which is oxidative, i simply squeeze outta the tube and slap it on my hair. Direct pigements (think manic panic but obviously i dont use manic panic, just a reference) are near impossible to get out of the hair cuticle. I dont want to bleach my whole head as the health of my hair is quite important to me....so i'm left with doing it in stages. Which means I will have to run my business and attend to clients with faded out orangey hair for a while.

Would you trust a stylist with faded out orange toned hair? Thats my fear. Clients come in and expect miracles. They wanna walk in with black and end up blonde....or come in with red and end up brown - and all in one visit. How am I supposed to explain that I am changing, but it is a process that cannot be healthily completed in one sitting. I mean, you expcet miacles from your stylist but if they cant even do their own hair properly in one sitting, my confidence in them would be a bit shot too.

Sorry its a long post, I just wanted non industry outsiders point of view, my staff say just suck it up, my hair will be a bit damaged but just do it in one sitting...I on the other hand would like to NOT damage my hair and have it a gradual process....what do you guys think?

i probably wouldn't, until they explained it to me. just tell each customer you see what you're doing and they will probably understand, and even trust you more because you know what you're doing.

or

wear a wig?

Nope.. but of course they dont know your situation

If I was you Id leave it,, besides red is nice

oooo maybe I will take a weekly pic of my hair to show the progress then a final photo once its done!

I'm doin it!

could you maybe on the parts that you are slowly getting lighter tone them to some sort of brown at the inveteween steps?

i wouldnt be botherd by it if you were able to keep the fading even, but once it got blotchy i would probably lose faith in you dying my hair

Yeah no i would definetly be filling and toning in between....like i said, it will be about a 5 week process

i think you should be fine than, the salon i go to is in a pretty snoby neighborhood, and there are people there with blue hair and stuff (employees not customers)

as long as it looks like it could of potentially been intentional, aka it looks well maintained and the hair is not 5 diffrent colors over the length of one piece i think it would not be a problem.

If you are really worried you could do as someome suggest and take pics of your steps and display them in the salon showing how to safely make the transformation. Then you could use to help customers understand the process when they want to do the same, or when they want to go from jet black to platinum. Oh how i wish i had your hair hahah

Love Saja's idea.

Who knows, maybe you will inspire some clients to try something similar.

Regardless, if you let me knew what you were doing, it certainly wouldn't sway me from visiting your salon.

i got some cool hair tips from here //tinyurl.com/ygze3qt

*Add supplements to your diet. Vitamins and minerals such as vitamins B, C, and F, zinc, iron and copper can help promote hair growth.

* Another hair growth tip is to include lean protein such as chicken and fish in your diet. Just don’t fry it. Grilled or broiled is best.

* Make your own conditioning rinse. Just boil one cup of celery leaves with the stems. After you strain them, add the juice from one lemon. Use this after you wash your hair to get soft silky hair. This can replace those expensive conditioners.

* Try lavender oil. In addition to its relaxing scent, lavender oil has been shown to improve hair growth. Work the oil into your scalp once every week. Leave it on for 30 minutes and then wash with shampoo.

* You should get a trim at least every month. This removes hurt ends and leaves your hair looking healthier.

Ummm thanks...but I dont need any help in that department and its kind of irrelivent to what Im talkin about anyway

It should be fine Gina. People expect stylists to change up their look, so they probably won't even be freaked out that you are doing it. You will probably style your hair so beatifully anyways that they won't notice the 'fading'. As you said, your hair is in good health, so it won't look anywhere near as bad as someone else with poorly kept locks.

If I was your client and saw pics of your transformation it wouldn't stop me from coming to you for hair services

Please let us know what you decide. I hope you go for it!

Honestly, I can't say that I'd trust her to color my hair. I do agree with Saja though. I think it's a great idea! You should go for it and keep us posted.

So I was approached by an educator for the colour brand I use in the salon, and asked if I wanted to participate in a 'corrective colour' demo....lol its like they KNEW i wanted to change but was conflicted. So shortly after Easter, they will be doing my hair at a seminar to show how to safely and effectively go from red to blonde tones. Its a win, win! I will definetly post pics of before and after.

Oh how i wish i had your hair hahah This is an amazing idea. When I see stylists with questionable hair I run the other way. If you were showing them your own transformation it would certainly give them even more of a reason to trust you.
Edit: That's awesome that you are getting it done. Seems like it all turned out well.
