Hello everyone !

My question is for those of you who constantly use hair irons (not the cheap ones but those with ceramids): Do you feel that the frequent usage of that has done any damage to your hair? I`ve almost convinced myself that I cannot manage without one --but I`ve also heard a lot of precautions about how these things damage your hair.

In short, I would be glad to hear your comments on that subject.

Thanks in advance,

Julia

I use mine on pretty much a daily basis--sometimes twice in the same process (waver and straight). They're both Chi irons.

I make sure to use a good, gentle sulfate-free shampoo and conditioner (I like the Pureology line), especially a deep conditioner on the ends, and a end fortifier (I like Redken's Anti-Snap). When I'm using any heat, I make sure to use a good heat protecting spray (I go with Hot Sets or Spray Starch, both by Redken). I try to wash my hair the night before, so I'm not using a blow dryer and a flat iron. Plus, the days I'm bumming around the house, I give my hair time off from being styled.

I've not really had a problem with hair damage. I only have it cut about 3 times a year, as I am growing it out. I rarely to never get split ends.

I cannot go without my iron. Seriously. I ran a couple errands havings just washed my hair and decided screw it! Well, I ended up being surprised by a camera crew while at the grocery store, on the 6 o'clock news--and I thought my hair looked like a frizzy untamed mess.

Thanks for your response, luckycharm! So, are you saying, if you take an extra care in your hair, it`ll survive an iron explosion , right?

I`ll start looking for good heat protecting gel. Are you applying it only on the hair`s edges or on the whole ?

I recently got a hair cut that requires using a flat iron to make it look right. I got a Tourmaline iron from Sally's "Helen of Troy" brand.

I also use a heat protectant spray prior to using the iron on my hair. So far after almost 3 months of daily use, I see no damage to my hair. I really believe Tourmaline devices and the protectant spray are the keys to preventing scorching of hair.

I really don't think there's any straightening iron that doesn't damage hair.

If it burns your skin, it'll burn your hair.

Heat protectant sprays do work but be careful of ones that contain alcohol... Alcohol + hair is not good. Alcohol + hair + heat is even worse.

And never ever straighten hair that is slightly damp. Ever.

The protectant spray goes all over, not just the ends.
Yep, I've put my hair through heck, and it holds up really well! Just take care of it otherwise and it'll put up with a lot.
