i was going to die my hair a bright purple or something my hair is sort of a darkish brown should i bleach it first?

If you want it to turn out more vibrant I'd use bleach to take you hair color up one shade, but BE CAREFUL...because if you bleach your hair too much, it could be damaging and the dye might be harsh or light. Make sure you condition your hair regularly as well...lighter colors tend to be worst on your hair....Good luck and post pics.

unfortunately, if you want it bright purple, you are gonnna have to bleach it. Be careful, bleaching is dangerous and harmful to the hair sometimes

There is a 99 percent chance you will have to bleach it. But, there is a product by manic panic (they have it on their website) that i've seen used on dark hair and it comes out pretty vibrant. The only problem is they keep it in for hours! I mean like, they put the color on, put a cap on, and then go to bed.

If you just want to do streaks the best thing for your hair would be to just buy some human hair extensions and color them.

What everyone said, you are going to have to bleach it if you want your hair to turn out the bright purple it promises on the hairdye package...

I did this, and right now my hair is pink-red, and am really really content with it, I love it! And my hair is actually really healthy at the moment, just take extra care after the bleaching and dying... like limiting chemical shampoos (I use all-natural shampoo made of aloe vera and natural oils...you might want to look into it, aloe vera is healing by nature and as this shampoo contains no chemicals, this is only benefitial for you) and giving yourself hair masks/conditioners weekly, leave a good hairmask in overnight and wash it out in the morning for extra nurturing, things like that.

Good luck with the purple, if it suits you, bright colors can really look awesome

take pics!

i'd make sure this is something you really want because if you dont like it or get sick of it your going to have it bleached out i dont think you can use regular high dye to cover it just make sure this is something you want have you considered dying it like a plum color with reg. hair dye to try it out and see if purples are a color for you

There's a great chance u might have to bleach and it does dry the hell out of hair!!

thanks for the info and ill deffidently take pictures and what is the stuff called by manic panic or it just any manic panic dye?

I found the page i was looking for and there is a lady with naturally dark brown hair who uses the gel. She says she puts the dye in and then covers it with a plastic bag and sleeps in it.

MANIC PANIC® GEL HAIR COLOR IS A THICK LIQUID GEL WITH INTENSIFIED COLOR PIGMENT.

THE COLORS TEND TO BE SLIGHTLY DEEPER THAN THE CREAMS, RESULTING IN MAXIMUM STAYING POWER.

THEY ARE PACKAGED IN AN EASY-TO-USE SQUEEZE BOTTLE: GREAT FOR STREAKING AND COLOR COMBINING!

here's the page, hth!

Yes, for the best results you are gonna have to bleach it first. My natural haircolor is dark too. I tried years ago to dye mine purple and it didn't take. And I left it in for hours. Manic Panic does make a bleach you can use before the color. They carry it at Sally's.

a friend of mine with dark brown hair once bleached her hair at home(I think from a Clairol brand, not sure though) so she could dye it red after, only the bleaching came out really awful--brassy,with greenish and orange tones-- and she had to have it professionally redone.I'm not saying,of course, that this will happen to you, but just to be on the safe side, I have heard it suggested that, if you're natually dark haired, the first time you dramatically lighten your hair you should probably have it professionally done. It's just a suggestion;maybe talk to a haircolorist about it? And do post pics, once your hair is the color you want it!

for vibrancy I'd go with bleach. Sallys used to carry a set that came with bleach and color. It works really well. It doesnt overly bleach it, but bleaches it enough to get the vivid color your looking for.

That Manic Panic looks pretty promising. I might look up into it! Thanks Kristie. Good luck with the purple, I find that purple suits more people than blue or green.

You're welcome Harlot! If you try it, just don't sleep with white pillowcases/sheets the first few nights. LOL
