you'd have to bleach out the black and then add the brown color you want. Anytime you go lighter you have to pull the color out first. It could be pretty damaging i'd think

im not sure if this will work for you but you can try.in february of 2006 i got highlights. i lasted with them for like 5-6 months. well during the summer i dyed it dark dark brown, which is really close to being black but not that harsh. so i wanted to lighten it so i dyed it black cherry, this color looks black indoors and purple outdoors but it fades into a redish color. once you have it into that redish color you can dye it to a chocolate brown.

I'd need to know exactly what color you used on your hair... level 1 black/blue base or what??? If your hair is damaged it may fade from the porosity, but like greeneyedangel said normally you'd have to lighten the hair then go back in with the desired color. If it fades enough on it's own you could put say one shade lighter than what you want w/ the corrective base for whatever color you used to begin with.... like a base of blue would be corrected with a base of orange.... if any of this makes any sense lol. But if your hair is really damaged I don't think bleach it until you use some treatments and get some strength and moisture back into it.

Hope this helps! if you got any ??? just ask!

You can't color black hair brown until you strip the black out. Most likely you would have to strip the black down to, at least, the "orange level".

If your hair is damaged right now I don't think stripping would be a good idea. Sounds like you may want to stay with the black until it grows out some.

Hope this helps you out!

Oh thankyou everyone!

well im not sure if this is a good thing but my hair is very porous and the black has faded to almost a dull medium/dark brown in parts? lol i feel like doing a brittany and shaving it all off and starting again but oh no i wont go that far! lol i might go to a hairdresser and see what they can do even a few shades lighter than the black i put in would be good right now. and stefawn not sure what kind of black but it did say blue black or something along those lines when i purchased it! ha ha

stop using a color safe shampoo and wait until it fades out.

cause honestly when you dye your hair black is pretty hard to get it another color for a long long time (unless its naturally dark/black [like mine] then its just a pain to get any color in in general).
