Beauty Crisis: How to Keep a Curl

by Teen Vogue August 11, 2010

Josseline, you want to know how to get your super-straight hair to keep a curl and what products to use to keep your ringlets bouncing for hours. We called some experts to help with your tress trouble!

Between the elements and your hair's natural lack of body, sometimes getting your locks just as you'd like them can be a struggle. New York City-based celebrity stylist Sally Hershberger recommends sectioning your hair off into 1.5-2 inch sections of hair, and then "spraying it with Sally Hershberger Texture Blast [before] wrapping a large barrel curling iron around each section." Use a dime-size amount of styling cream (like my Sally Hershberger Hyper Hydration Soft Touch Shaping Cream) and mash it in the palm of your hand. "Then, use your fingers to comb through your hair to add separation and dimension to curls and waves," says Hershberger.

"If your hair is not holding a curl, it could be due to a couple of reasons: lack of moisture or [that the] texture is too soft to hold the set," says Tammy Mixon, a member of Farouk Systems Global Artistic Board. "If hair is lacking moisture, the tensile strength is compromised and it can't bounce back." Mixon recommends using CHI Nourish Intense Cleanse and Conditioning products to restore moisture. "If hair is too limp or soft, try spraying the section of hair you are about to curl with hairspray," says Mixon. Allow hair to cool down before touching them, and "save yourself the trouble of buying a cheap iron. A quality iron will not only perform better and be gentler on your hair, but it will last longer," notes Mixon. Mixon suggest using "the CHI Cermaic Hairstyling Iron, [because it] has styling versatility to straighten, curl and flip hair--all with moisturizing ceramic heat that won't fry your tresses."

For a quick way to get curls, Eugene Smith, lead stylist of the Ted Gibson Salon in New York City, recommends first prepping your hair "with a once over of Ted Gibson Beautiful hold hairspray for style memory and shine." Next, "separate hair into six vertical sections, [and] wrap each section of hair around the barrel" of your curling iron. Allow your curls to fall and cool down. Finish off your ringlets with hairspray. To keep your curls all day, "invest in a travel sized spray, like Ted Gibson Beautiful hold, to refresh as needed and to resist humidity."
