Yes it was. They had posted it under someone's comment. Turns out though that instead of a "gift" they are going to do a giveaway for a free year of Beauty Army when you refer people.

That's interesting.  Hmmmm...well I'm still excited to see the products!  Looks like the samples are a little bit bigger than what I have been getting in most of my Birchboxes.  I only signed up for the month-to-month because I like to have the freedom to leave.

I'm glad I waited it out.  Got the LaRocca Lip Balm, Blingtone eyeshadow in sp'ice'y, lift lab eye cream, m.a.d age corrective serum, joico k-pak revitaluxe and cellceuticles neo cell.   definitely happy with all the sizes and glad i took the quiz 3 times to get those choices!

I agree, yesterday I was so focused on getting signed up that I didn't even fill out any beauty profile until after I picked my samples.

it seriously took me an hour and 40 minutes total.  i almost decided to say forget it after i saw my first batch of picks.  then i decided to take the quiz a second time and still wasn't impressed.  the third try was just for kicks, and ended up being a charm.   i'm pretty sure my samples are worth about $80-90 total.   yep.  i'm that dork who did the math... haha!  we will see though...

I signed up to be notified of when they were taking subscriptions and got my notice yesterday. I dud the quiz twice and wasn't impressed with the samples so I decided to not sign up. I already signed up for MyGlam, which seems like it's going to be much better, especially since bloggers etc are involved with it. They really know what we want, as opposed to a company that is only in this for the money. I really believe that MyGlam is going to wind up blowing some of the other companies which are running subscription services out of the water. They're just in their beginning stages now and it seems like they're not doing too badly.

I'm still waiting to see how myglam pans out... the first bag looked really nice, but from the sneak peek of the second bag, I don't think I'd want it.  I wouldn't want the cucumber facewash and the concealer seems like the big ticket item, and I wouldn't want a concealer that I didn't choose for myself.  I liked the samples I chose on beautyarmy enough to pay the $12 for this month... and I'll just cancel next month if I don't like the options.  I already canceled my birchbox for now.  I think I'm just not quite on board with the idea of spending $120 to $240 per year on a series of surprise stuff that I may like or may hate (and if I hate it I can't return it!)

I completely agree with you. myglam and birchbox seem to play into the young and fun aspect of beauty both in marketing and products. this got everyone hyped up, but the products just dont seem to wow as much as the competition especially in size. We have a couple of high end health food stores around town that'll give you samples of half these products for free. I have strivectin, cellucuticals, and a shea terra samples already lying around my house. Its obviously still fun to try new products, but considering my last glam bag had 3 full sized products and 2 deluxe samples for less cost it just seems like it falls flat in comparison.

I agree the second bag doesn't look as promising as the first, but myglam posted today saying big changes were on the way. Reward programs, a more interactive community, and much more personalized products each month. as you said its important to see it in action, but I feel like they have a greater potential for growth. I think in 6 months or so they might be the subscription service to beat

It will be fun to see how things go with all of these subscription programs, especially now that they're forced to compete with each other.  I feel like Birchbox sent out some amazing stuff in the early months and then it tapered off, and it'll be interesting to see if the second myglam bag is already a downgrade from the first or not.  I wonder if the strategy for subscription programs is to put out some really nice expensive stuff at the beginning, even though it may mean losing money, just so you can attract a bunch of subscribers... and then as months go on lower the quality of samples in order to start making a profit.  We'll see...

That definitely seems to be common. Not that companies always keep their word, but I've received comments from myglam before stating they don't plan to pull a "birchbox" (that's a term now!) by opening up unlimited subscriptions and decreasing the product sizes. I think they see that it will get you immediate subscribers, but people will leave for the next better thing if the service does go downhill. The january bag doesn't seem like my taste, but we are getting i believe 3 full sized products and the bag is valued at over $50. So even if they don't work for me I'm at least happy I'm not getting a bunch of tiny samples. Considering each bag will have a theme I'm sure it'll be hit or miss with the products, but hopefully when the in depth quiz launches it'll be better. For the cost of 2 starbucks drinks I'm not going to complain though =P

Heh, my card got charged, but apparently they couldn't "verify it" (wtf) so we'll see how this debacle goes and we'll see if I get double-charged...

That sounds ideal and I'm sure Birchbox wanted to keep sending out lots of full sized products, but it probably just wasn't possible for them to make a profit doing that. At some point myglam is gonna want to make a profit too and they'll have to find something to cut in order to do that... whether it's product size or customer service or something else.

The problem with January's bag is the nail polish - it's against US postal service to send. Which leads to the question how will this month's bags be sent out? Legally and shipped via ground or illegally via USPS First Class Mail? My second "beef" with them is even if the items are full size there are potential problems with the items shipped out - one is a drugstore item (I HATE it when companies send out drugstore items) and at least one product that might not match my skintone (if they send out a light) or might not match someone else's skin tone (if they're super light and the item they send out is medium). Just because it's full size doesn't mean it's something of value that the person subscribed wanted. GoGoGirlfriend sends out full size items - from ELF - but if I'm paying $12 I don't want $1 items in my box which is what GGG is known to send out.

USPS Don’t send a hazardous material. From perfume to batteries, you might be surprised by our list of what’s not safe to put in the mail.

Check our list of hazardous materials ›

Many household items can’t go in the mail.

Hazardous materials come in a wide variety of forms and can be chemical, biological, radioactive, or a combination.

The Postal Service'sâ„¢ definition of a hazardous material includes many common household and consumer products. They may not be dangerous on your shelf at home, but they can become a hazard when shaken or when the temperature or pressure changes.

Some common hazardous materials include…

  • Perfumes
  • Nail polish
  • Flea collars or flea sprays
  • Aerosols
  • Bleach
  • Pool chemicals
  • Paints
  • Matches
  • Batteries
  • Fuels or gasoline
  • Airbags
  • Dry ice
  • Mercury thermometers
  • Cleaning supplies
  • Items previously containing fuel
  • Glues
  • Fireworks
This is why Birchbox sends out items with perfumes, hairsprays and nail polish via Streamlite instead of USPS Priority or First Class Mail. If January bag is to contain nail polish they are required to send it ground via UPS, FedEx, Streamlite or any other ground shipping company.

I was actually wondering the same thing about shipping. I hope they nix usps after how many problems the december bag had. And I really don't mind receiving a drug store product every once in a while, especially since myglam advertised that the stylists are sending us products they love and have often showcased in their personal videos. Watching the stylists videos I often hear them say they judge prodcts by performance, not price tag so I was expecting to receive a mix of high and low end items since that's what they personally use. I know I love my loreal voluminous mascara more than any department store one so I try to keep an open mind. It doesn't just seem like a poor excuse to send dollar items to lower the overall cost of the bags like GGG at this point. Again we will have to see how the service is a few months down the line....it could get way better or way worse. And I completely agree about the concealer. Until the in depth quiz is in effect they should not be sending out skin tone specific products.

These group things are confusing me. It seems redundant to have an existing thread discussing a topic, and then another thread that's essentially the exact same discussion, but it's in a group. Hard to keep track of it all.

I didn't lock the subscription threads in the main forums because of the current discussions. In the future (meaning next month) I won't be posting new threads here on the various subscriptions and will only post in the groups. Basically, I'm hoping in the month people will come to use the groups more than the main forums to discuss MyGlam, Birchbox, etc. :D /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

What's the difference between the thread on the main page and the thread in a group?  Someone new to MUT won't know about the "groups" and therefore go elsewhere for answers.

From what I'm seeing, it is not possible for someone Googling MyGlam or Birchbox etc, to reach this group.  That would mean less traffic for Tony and I'm not sure that's what he's after.  The only references Google is picking up is the talk on the main forum pages.  Tony.......any thoughts?
