I really want to dye my hair a light auburn color. My hair is currently a light brown, course, and dry. I want something semi permanent (right now I think I'm going to go with Natural Instincts Spiced Tea).

Right now, I'm just wanting to try it out, so I want the color to fade enough that I don't need to re-dye my hair when I get new growth. Would this be possible for me? I've heard red fades but it's also the hardest to completely remove.

If anyone has experience with that particular dye especially, let me know.

Look for a semi permanent that is "golden, red, or warm".

All three will provide a hue of red on your hair.

A semi should last 3 or 4 weeks, if you wash your hair every other day or so. Then it will be faded or washed out to your natural colour.

If you like the new red colour and want to keep it, you need to dye your hair a permanent red colour. Then just dye the roots every 3-4 weeks.

I tend to dye my entire hair every 3-4 months as the colour will start to fade, even with permanent hair colour.

Red is a tricky colour to dye and to maintain. You might want to get the permanent red dyed by a professional.

But you can make the colour last by only washing your hair every 3-4 days. Its the water that causes the colour loss more than anything.

Also, consider wearing a hat if your are in the sun.

I don't think you really read my question, but thanks for the information. I'm looking for something that doesn't last more than about a month. I don't want permanent color.

I want to find out whether it should fade in time or I will have to dye my roots because it didn't fade enough to where it was my natural color again.

I only wash my hair about once or twice a week.

Whenever I dyed my hair using a non-permanent dye, I would always have root problems. It would never fade completely out of my hair.

Whether or not it completely comes out depends on the porosity and lightness of your hair. Idk how light your hair is... nor if it's damaged or not.. but if it is particularly porous it probably won't completely fade out. I'd recommend going to Sally Beauty Supply for demi dyes as they have more options that are often more true to swatch than box dyes, in my opinion. Of course, keep in mind that the demi's can't lift, they just add to your current color, so if you want a BAM!-bright cherry red that's not going to happen with a demi permanent.

HTH

edit- Oops, just noticed you said you're going for auburn! In that case, when looking at demi-permanents just go a bit more red than you think.. since your hair starts off with a brown base

You need that bottle with glaze from John Frieda, because red is the colour that dissapear first, but goes in last.
