I'm seriously considering dreadlocks and I might get it done in a chic hairstyle like a long bouffant/pomp. The challenge will be to avoid accidentally making it a mullet.

This is what I mean by the general shape I want:

Maybe a long A-line (it's worked for me for a long time) as in long, thinner dreads on the bottom; as well as thicker dreads on top to pile up and give the look I want to achieve. I think I have the confidence to pull this off even though I have never seen anyone with that particular style.

Do you think this is a style that can be committed to without looking totally dated at some point?

Do you think its edgy but stylish enough that people will talk to me long enough to get to know me and maybe take me seriously?

I also need tips on how to summon my edgy side without looking too intimidating, which is a problem I have had for years and still have. I want to look more approachable, but still feel like my unique self.

Dreads are a huge commitment and I really need to know whether or not people could take me seriously with that hair-do.

Tried way too long to fit in! New schools can do that to you. I'm ready for my old me. I do this annually lol.

I put this in fashion and not hair because it's about my total style.

I think part of it might depend on where you live. For example, people from New York and people from Nebraska might respond to dreads differently. lol.

I think it would be a really cool look. Not sure about people taking you seriously with dreads, though.

If you want people to take you seriously, then I don't recommend it. But really, do what you want. Other people do what they want and so should you to be happy with yourself.

Well i live in nyc and i dont really like dreads all that much unless you keep them up. Dreads can look really gross on certain people.

I agree with the others on not doing it if you want to be taken more seriously... Alas, it's your decision in the end...

i wouldnt do it and dont really like them, but its your hair and do what you like..

I agree with the others, it depends on were you live and so on. I personally don't like them done on girls, but If you like it you should just do it.

This is just my opinion, but I don't think you would be taken seriously in dreadlocks. I probably have some sort of prejudice against them or something, but to me, they just give a person an unwashed appearance.

i think dreads look cool on some people and it is your choice cuz in the end your pretty much gonna go with what you really want but my personal opinion? i think your waaaaayyyyy too pretty to get dreads! and im not saying people with dreads are ugly by any means i just think its too hard of a look for someone with soft features like yours.

I want to say in defense of dreads (lol) that they do have to be washed often and I will take good care of them.

I'll just see how I look and if it doesn't work out I will probably just soak my head in conditioner and let it come out. I was going to either do this, or go short anyways.

i wanted to get it done, but if i didnt want it anymore, you'd have to cut the dread part off. and i couldnt deal with chopping my hair really short again.

but i still wish i could.

btw everyone thats not me in the picture. i guess i should have said that. I was wondering how some of you knew what I looked like XD

If you don't like the dreads, you can soak them in conditioner to get them out (especially if you haven't had them in for a long time).

I had a friends in Ca (a couple, male/female) that both had them. My girlfirend was absolutely adorable, she was probably the cutest chick I've ever seen with dreads, shoulder length and red. My guy friend was really cool and had long bleach blond dreads. They were a really cool couple, very intelligent, owned their own buisness but still had to deal with a lot of prejudice because of their looks. If you want to be different and controversial and you don't mind being an outsider (because you will feel like one from time to time) then do it. If you really want to be more approachable and taken seriously upon first meeting someone I would suggest you don't do it.

What about braids, they look a lot cleaner than dreads and can still give you a different look. I had braids for a while, they were really skinny, long to the middle of the back and curled at the bottom. I kept my bangs out, I had betty bangs at the time with blond hair.

I think it could be cute, and as you said if you don't like them you can just take them out.

Sorry I moved this to hair! I just realized the little disclaimer as to why you put it in fashion!

it's ok, it was hard to see.

Anyways, my picture is my avatar now so maybe that will give you guys a better idea of whether this will work for me.

haha my lips are kinda puckery but thats ok

I have to agree with the others on not being taken seriously at first with dreads. I also feel like you shouldn't have to conform and be able to do what you want. I guess it just comes down to what is more important to you-- how you want to wear your hair/what you feel more comfortable in OR the need to be taken professionally/seriously.

Good luck on your decision and I hope you are happy with what you choose :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

i totally love the idea of creating something that reflects who you really are! i love that folks that may not know me personally always remember my bushy mane! i think that you can definitely pull off something that edgy and still be approachable! just remember, dreads are great, but once the hair is locked there's no going back, so be sure!

i just saw your profile pic (you're such a cutie!) and i think maybe a two strand twist would give you the edgey look you want, but would be easy to change if you decide to change your style. please post pics of what you decide to go with!
