I coloured my hair a few months ago, in a colour called bitter chocolate. It's a little bit darker than my regular hair colour, and although I kind of liked it at first, I'm over it now.

The problem is, my natural colour is starting to show at the roots. The darker colour is making my natural roots look almost grey!

For summer, I want to lighten up, so I really don't want to just recolour.

What would you do if you were me? Try and cover the roots? if so, how?

Hm..can you just lighten all your hair now? Do you want to go lighter than your roots?

I thought about going lighter than the roots. The colour that is in at the moment is a permanent colour though, so I'm afraid of ending up with brassy skanky hair, lol. I've never had good at home results with lightening.

Do you just want to cover up the roots?

I'm not sure if they sell this in Australia but there's this product: Clairol - Nice 'n Easy Root Touch-Up - Home

I've never used it but apparantly it's very quick and easy to use. You just choose a colour similar to the rest of your hair then use the brush to apply it to your roots.

I think we do have it.. but I don't want to recolour it the same as the rest of my hair.. I'm kind of getting sick of that colour, LOL

Hmm...if you're worried about your hair looking brassy if you lighten the whole thing, maybe get highlights done? It'll lighten the overall look and take away from the two-tone look.

I third the highlight suggestion lol.

It would add a lighter color to your hair without as much damage, break up the dark color, and get rid of your visible roots.

Overall it will make your hair look lighter altogether. Why not try a dark blonde or light brown? Then if you really like it, you can dye all your hair like that with some lowlights and highlights to give it dimensions?

I'd go to a salon and let them figure it out!!! Hair chemistry can be complicated!!! lol

I concur with everyone else, highlights! Perhaps a few blonde/light brown highlights scattered throughout your hair, it would definately lighten it up a fair bit. I think a combo like that would look gorgeous on you

i agree... I think it would look good, but I'm looking for something reaaaally low maintenance. If I get highlights then I'll have to maintain them... and I'm lazy!

Like Karen said - Ask a good hairdresser. Also what is it about the current colour you don't like?

I dont think highlights are that high maintenance! I havent touched mine up in ages, but also because I dont plan to lol. Thats besides the point. They dont look bad is what I mean. Celebs rock their roots growing in ...I dont see why we cant lol.

I think once you did the highlights it would be like a stepping stone to picking an overall lighter shade for you. Then you could just dye all your hair.

I really like your current color

You could just dye it a few shades lighter if you think its washing you out, skip the highlights step altogether?

lowlights mixed with highlights!!!! and then gradually work your way to your hair.

Highlights aside... If I try to lighten the whole thing at home, will my hair go some weird colour?

my sister has highlights and I don't like the way they look growing out...Plus, I'd have to do that at a salon since I wouldn't trust myself to do it at home, lol I'm a hair fool! and I'm looking for a cheap solution since I'm saving

I really like this colour: do you guys think it would be too light for me?

I think that color would be super cute on you, especially since you're always so glowy. If you're really scared of lightening the darker part, you should use a color-stripper.
