Ok, so I have been wanting to dye my hair for a long time... I used to have caramel/coppery highlights in it that looked FABULOUS, but after like a year or two I got tired of them...

In August I had my stylist color over the highlights with my natural brown that you see in all my pics... But I have been wanting to go darker, a dark brown-black or just plain black... But I do NOT want blue hair!! I hate that black blue thing going on...

I would like a shiny flat black that looks good (you know how some people dye their hair black and the color itself looks a little "eh").

Is there a product I can buy on my own to do this or should I have my stylist do it? I don't want my hair to get damaged by an over the counter hair dye, and I also want something that is going to be pretty...

JEEZ this is a long post!! Sorry... :icon_redf

i would go to a stylist. they would know of the right color to do. and if you don't like it, i'm pretty sure that they're supposed to fix it. but ask them first

Eh my stylist is fantastic, and if I didn't like it (even if it was what I asked for) he would fix it... He is super fabulous, and cute to boot! All tattooed, pierced, and nice.

I have dyed my hair before, but that was when I was younger and I don't really know which at home dye jobs are good ones... I wouldn't have a problem doing it myself, and I figured since it is just a single process color and I am not going to do anything crazy with it that it would be easy to do at home...

I would say go with a stylist too. I have dark blonde hair (it is lighter than inthis pic but looks weird on puter), I used to dye my hair blonde in college and thought I was all that, but yeesh it didnt look as good as I thought. (I did it b/c my hair started turning brown about age 20. I screwed it all up a few years ago thinking I could do it myself and it turned red. Right before a second date, no less. He said, "wasnt your hair blonde?" :--

i think you should dye it a nice dark brown...bc black is very hard to get rid of if u ever wana change ure color..from experience..and IMO i think dark brown isnt as harsh and much flattering on people..

i agree with anita na. black is really impossible to get rid of, and you can kill your hair in the process of doing it! i think if anyone could pull it off, it would be you with your coloring, but maybe you could try a super dark brown with highlights in another shade of brown. i think that would be fun...

are you opposed to anything with reddish dark brown tones? because i think that would look amazing on you too!

I´d go for a very dark brown, can´t really see imagine you with black hair, maybe that´d look too harsh. oh well I don´t know much about hair though, I´d be too scared for a drastic hair color change ;) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I agree with Andrea. If you weren't born with black hair... it sometimes is hard to pull off. Some people just have that skin tone that matches it perfectly.... be it dark or light - it just works. I've seen a lot of people just go and do black and think that it would look ok... but it does sometimes come out harsh if you aren't 'meant' for it. I would do a dark/darkest brown.... it's just as dark, (unless you're in the sun... it looks almost black) but will go with your coloring a bit better. :) /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

I have always loved the Jet Black hair look, of course i naturally have almost Jet Black hair, i do agree that black hair is IMPOSSIBLE to get rid of, so no i don't recommend it since i am pretty sure like all women you are gonna want a new color in a couple of months. Go Dark Brown first.

I had really bleached blond hair up until about 2 months ago. I dyed my hair dark with a drugstore dye :/ -- it was the second darkest shade the company made. I did that because I knew my hair was so pourous alot of the color would fade out. When I first did it I was like :icon_eek: IT WAS BLACK-- and imagine going from bleach blond to black in an hour!! I was horrified! Neway I stuck it out and now it has settled into a med brown thankfully! I added some blond highlights around my face and it looks much better. If you decide to go dark you can always add a few lighter pieces framing your face to add some dimention and not make it look so drastic.

I also want to mention that if you go lighter never play with bleach by yourself! Go to a pro!! But to dye darker I say use a drugstore brand and save yourself some cash!

Hmmm my first opinon would be to go for the darkest brown also. Also I don`t know if you know Bigen, but I have used this once and the color did look great, it was black also. And the great thing about this is, that it isn`t to bad for your hair and also when your hair is colored with this it can look natural. I like the hair color that Alyssa Milano has right now, it looks very dark without looking harsh. But what do you think of that colour?

Can't really add much to this thread but I can't wait to see how it turns out.

Well I think I will go with you guys' suggestions and go for a freakin dark brown and see what happens...

And no I am not opposed to reddish and golden highlights/tones...I used to have highlights that color, and they do and did look amazing on!! I just got tired of having to get my hair re-highlighted all the time... Plus it saves $$. I am happy having a single color hair job... I miss it like this oddly enough.

The one thing that isn't all that clear is whether to dye at home or at the salon...

i would definately go to a salon and get it colored! they are trained to mix the colors expertly, and i think it makes a big difference. worth the money in my opinion!

Ok, then it is decided! Next time I go to Gary, he is going to brown-black me, and trim a TEENY bit... (I am trying to grow out my hair...)

Thanks so much everyone!!
