I have noticed my hair is healtheier as far as dryness and split ends/ breakage, but is still has no life or volume. Give me the ultimate suggestions for full volumized hair. Thanks gals. products and tools etc.

STEP 1: Try not to wash your hair the day you’re going to be styling it if possible. Hair that isn’t freshly washed tends to have more hair volume. If you must wash your hair that day, use a volumizing shampoo and conditioner.

STEP 2: Apply a volumizing mousse or root volumizing spray to damp hair. Work the hair product through the hair thoroughly using a wide toothed comb.

STEP 3: Flip your head upside down and blow dry your hair on a medium setting. Massage your scalp with your fingers while drying your hair to give extra lift at the roots. If you have curly hair, scrunch the hair in your hands while aiming the nozzle at the section of hair you’re scrunching.

STEP 4: Flip your head right side up again while your hair is still slightly damp if you plan on wearing your hair straight, and finish drying using a large vent brush or round brush to continue styling your hair.

STEP 5: Use your brush to lift the first one to two inches of your hair straight up away from your scalp and point the dryer’s nozzle under the section directed upwards for more hair volume at the roots of your hair. Leave the dryer there for a few seconds and then move on to the next section.

STEP 6: Use the brush to smooth the shaft and ends of your hair and finish drying your hair completely.

STEP 7: Finish scrunching the hair until it is only slightly damp if you are wearing your hair curly. Let your hair air dry the rest of the way to avoid your hair getting frizzy.

STEP 8: Use a dime- to a quarter-sized dollop of hair pomade or styling wax to tame any frizzies and define the ends of the hair or any layers you may have.

STEP 9: For a final burst of hair volume, flip your head upside down again and lightly mist your hair with a light-hold hair spray. Bring your head right side up again and use your fingers to fix any stray hairs. :11a:

I have thin hair as well, and the only thing that works for me is basically a day-long process! If blowdrying agrees with your hair (it makes my hair look really bad), use the tips above.

1) Wash hair with Ojon Hydrating Thickening Shampoo and Conditioner

2) Work John Frieda Frizz-Ease Serum through hair

3) Work Jonathan Create Volume Thickening Foam through hair, scrunch like crazy (I need to define my waves)

4) Flip hair upside down, twirl it into a messy bun, and clip it on top of your head. It looks really stupid, but it makes my hair defy gravity and helps hold the curl in place. I re-twist it a couple more times until it dries, and then it's good to go! Sometimes I change up the routine with different but similar products sometimes, but this is basically it.

Sarah, I edited your post so it was easier to read. Great tips ya'll!

You guys have some really great tips. I agree on getting the volume at the roots of the hair. Blow drying upside down really works. Oh and avoid oily products.

I too have thin hair. Very thin. I have tried so many products that advertise big sexy hair. They usually work for about one hour tops. Everything seems to make my hair limp. I've tried the upside down dryer. By the end of the day it really looks disgusting. I spend so much time on it. Any other suggestions!! Thanks!

According to Paula Begoun:

Don't let hair grow too long & layer hair.

Only shampoo hair - any conditioner will only weigh hair down.

Consider no styling products - same reason as above.

The less you touch, play with or style your hair, the more volume it will have.

Definitely AVOID pomades & styling waxes -- they will weigh your hair down. I had someone at an Aveda store use their spray wax on my hair and I ended up looking like my hair hadn't been washed in 4 or 5 days. My hair is really flat, too. If you need to smooth frizzies, use a teeny tiny bit of pomade or grooming cream and glide your hands very lightly over your hair.

Use shampoos & conditioners that don't leave behind residue and only put the conditioner on your ends. I've given up trying to make my hair really full of volume. I just dry upside down/against the direction I want it to go (when I actually blow dry) or I'll twist it back right out of the shower and then hairspray it into place so that when I take it down later it has some lift at the roots. Davines makes a good volumizing spray, too. It's not sticky like most volumizing sprays.

You know I have fine thin hair hate it always trying for more volumn. Now my sis has thick hair that she straightens always wishing she has my HAIR!!! Go figure.

I personally have tried just about everything nothing works for long, someday I would just like to accept my hair but I wont LOL

thanks for all the ideas. I wish I could just accept it too, but then I look in the mirror...never to late for a miracle. I'm going to try the Davine's spray. Where do you get it?

I have been reading lately a lot of good reviews about some vitamins from GNC called 'Nourishair'. The most recent ones I read were from drugstore.com. Every single person highly recommended it, saying they hair started growing quickly and more thickly. I am going to try it so I don't have personel experience with it, but I wanted to mention it. Will let ya all know in a while!!!

i don't use conditioner on the top portion of my scalp, becuase anything weighs my hair down terribly, but i do condition from my ears down. i have to wash and condition every day becuase anything left in my hair makes it look like i haven't washed it in a week. I will use a fine spray med hold hair spray on mostley dry hair and use a 1# round brush on the crown, gently/lightly back comb the under layers and then spray lightly to hold. I have to be careful not to make it look '80's. But i do think that using NIOXIN is helping me grow additional hair

you must avoid all the hair styling products and conditioners. it makes your hair heavier and kills the volume. it's a personal experience but the volume shampoos and sprays greased my roots and totally dried the rest of the length, so i avoid them too.

i blowdry my hair with the head upside down, using my hands a lot to style it a bit, and i always use the blowdryer at the minimum heat level. i finish styling my hair with a rounded brush.

the only hairspray i use and would recommend to everyone is Elnett. it's a really light texture so you can take it off easily when you brush your hair, and it stays put all day. my mom tried every hair spray on the market and that's the only one she uses.

I have thin hair too. I HATE IT!!!! it looks like I have about 2 and a half hairs. I also dry it upside down and puff it up a bit which helps a little.

my dh likes my hair better flat and straight I hate it everytime he sees it normal he always says you look great!!! I am beginning to think I should just let it go and do what it wants plus I think it makes me look younger than when I get some volumne or texture

I just found this thread and decided to put my $.02. I found some shampoos (Suave) that were specifically for fine hair or hair that needed thickening. I used them a couple of times but they made my hair look worse. I checked the ingredients and the two different conditioners both had dimethiconol which I'm guessing is a silicone product. One of the shampoos also had it. I switched back to a shampoo and conditioner without silicones in it and my hair is looking a little better. hth!

I have tried every product on the planet that claims to make thin hair thick and I find the most important thing is not to wash your hair everyday and let the products (hairspray, mousse etc,) build up in your hair. A layered cut is a must too. Someone mentioned to stay away from heavy pomades and waxes, which is true. Two spray on volumizers that I think work well to build up texture and fullness are Garnier Surf Spray and John Frieda Full BLown Blonde volumising spray.

But really, tried and true for me, the dirtier your hair is, the thicker it will look. Of course, after 3 days you have to wash or it will just be disgusting. And if you have really oily hair, this really doesn't apply to your. Oily and fine? Your best bet is just a really short cut.
