I'm so frustrated with my hair right now!! My hair is VERY curly/thick.. but, I love my hair straight. Everytime I go to get my hair done they tell me how damaged my hair is and how bad heat and flat ironing is for my hair.. and I know they know best, but sometimes I feel like they're exaggerating. I know my hair isn't in tip top shape but, she tried to convince me to throw my flat iron away!! Is there any '' safe '' way to straighten curly hair or do I really need to go au natural???

have u checked out Janelle's video tut on blow-drying ? It gives hair volume and leaves it shiny and straight.

You could try wrapping your hair around your head. This involves washing your hair at night. After towel drying divide hair into 2 sections like your are going to wear 2 pigtails. Then take the left section and secure it along your hairline on the right side with bobby pins. Do the same with the rights section. Sleep on it overnight and take it out in the morning. This won't get your hair as straight as a flat iron but it works relatively well. Another way I've tried is I gather all my hair on top of my head right above my forehead and put it in a ponytail (you kind of look like a unicorn lol). Then secure the ponytail along one side of your hairline with bobbypins and sleep on it. This method gets my hair straighter than the other method but it leaves a crimp where the ponytail was. I hope I've explained this well. Anyway, good luck!

Use a good heat protectant... try to avoid the iron as much as possible, and try to wear it curly more often until it's in a better condition. You also want to keep up on trims & deep conditionings

My hair is naturally thick and curly, like Tia and Tamera (from Sister Sister). And I don't get relaxers. Also, I have color in my hair, so I do try and stay away from (direct) heat as much as I can.

I wash it, deep condition (every time), then roller set it and sit under the dryer forever. It gets my hair straight, even the roots. Then I'll go over it a tiny bit with the curling iron.

Yes, I agree with the rollers. It is a little tedious but it does not damage your hair. If the rollers leave to much curl comb them out and just do one large roller on top of your head, then just wrap your hair around your head in the same direction and hold with large clips and after a few hours wrap it in the opposite direction. Your hair will be stick straight.

When I was young we used to call it the "doobie" don't ask me why. It just a way to wrap your hair to straighten it.

I still call it a doobie!

Mainly when my Dominicanas are doing my hair, and yes when I want less curl. Well I thought you call it a doobie because the way you wrap is the way you roll a doobie... :p /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

i also have curly/thick hair , and i wait til its about 70% air dry then i blow it out. my hair looks better and its less time blowing it out.

yeah i have the same problem as you do. their is no other way to make my hair look decent without straighening it. maybe you should try getting a weave or getting your hair braided. it can make your hair grow longer also =]

Or you could get a texutrizer (different from a relaxer) to loosen the natural curl so that it is more yielding to various styling options.

That is exactly what I do poca_ini but the problem is that my hair is long. I can’t roller set my own hair. Ever though I have spent about $700.00 on a hair drier, blower, rollers ect… I still pay some one every week to roller set my hair and then once is dry then she removes the waves from the rollers with the blow drier. My hair after that is wonderful.

I love it. The problem is that sometimes the chick that gets my hair done is not all that reliable. I have to get my hair done around her schedule. It sucks. Here in Cincinnati there is not a place that I can go to were the person is able to understand my hair.

Unfortunately there is not a lot of Dominicanas here that can do my hair and me being Dominican I have to have my hair done all the time…… I haven’t flat iron my hair just yet…. I’m thinking of getting the MaxiGlide…. I read about it here but if anyone has more to say about it please share your comments.

Glad Im not alone Teresa!

And yeah my stylists are never reliable and they are easily offended. Like, dag I just asked for more highlights. :p /emoticons/[email protected] 2x" width="20" height="20" />

Im in Minneapolis right now, *from the east coast*, and I cant find any Dominicanas out here. So I go to other people and instruct them as best as I can.

MaxiGlides are fine. They do a good job and gripping. But I just traded mine in for a CHI. Snags me less. I really feel that they all do the trick though.

Definitly get a good heat protectant! Paul Mitchell has a good spray that you spray on your hair when it's wet, then once it's try, there is a sealant over your hair, and it protects it from the extreme heat!

How funny I haven't heard that expression "the Doobie" in such a long time, only a puerto rican uses that term. You know I have the same problem my hair is naturally curly and I use the blow dryer and flat iron. My hair is super dry so I wash once a week! I know that may sound gross to some people but my hair looks it's best when it's got some of it's natural oil. I also use alot of conditioner and protection when I use the iron (sometimes). Us curly hair people I guess Have no other choice. I need to start doing the "doobie" again Marilyn .

Thank you for posting this tip, might have to check it out.

I have the same problem. I like my hair straight but i get so frustrated with it when it's curley I jsut want to cut it off. then when i do, i regret it. Just like i did recently, I am trying to grow it out now.But i use the ceramic flat iron, or the one that uses steam to starighten. My sister had that, i also saw it on HSN.

Maria, girl I'm telling you, leave it natural and get the HSH!!! I never would've believed it myself, but I'm honestly in LOVE with my hair for once in my life without it being straigthened! But alas, if you must straighten it, then go with what Janelle said

I'm sure I will be just fine! This is just for emergency. If I go out of town or if the chick can't do my hair!
