I am so fed up with my hair right now, and my hairdresser for that matter. Right now I am blonde, but it seems no matter how much I try to explain or show my hairdresser what shade of blonde I want, I never seem to get the desired result. I have been noticing more and more when I see my hair in different lights, that my hair looks ORANGE as apposed to blonde. If I wanted red hair, I would colour it red! I brought this up with my hairdresser on my last colour appointment (approx 3 weeks ago?) and explained that I have noticed in a lot of photos, my hair looks more orange than blonde. She told me that my hair naturally has a lot of red undertones and when my hair is coloured blonde, it "throws a lot of gold". I do know this, however, I have been colouring my hair blonde on and off since I was 15, so I know my hair is capable of being a light blonde.

Right now I have about a level 7 I think as my base and she has blonde highlights through the top, I also have some chocolate brown spliced in there as well. I asked her if we could lighten up the base, and keep my brown splices, I like those and she said that she didn't think I would like my hair lighter and that we should stick with my original base, I said I would rather it be lighter, and so I do believe she used a shade lighter. Again, I am not happy. I pay $125 for my colour and I am getting my hair done every 4-6 weeks, that's a lot of money to fork out, especially for something I am not entirely happy with. She does a beautiful job, it's just not the colour I want. I know I am not being unrealistic, as I have had really light blonde hair before. I have even taken in photos of the type of blonde I want, it just doesn't seem to be sinking in.

I also notice that after they have washed out my colour they are toning the living crap out of my hair to make it look lighter, after a few washes, it's back to square one with the golden colour.

I really like my hairdresser and she does do good work, but I don't know how to get through to her that this just isn't what I want. Do you think I should try one more time explaining again that I am not happy, or should I just switch hairdressers?

For reference, here are a couple recent photos of my colour.

and this one shows my highlights better (please ignore my hideous brows..growing them out!)

aww your so pretty!

but your right it is looking slightly orange colour. For the regular amount of money you pay i would be wanting something close to what you desire.

I don't know what to suggest but maybe it would be worth having a consultation with another hairdresser to see what they think about what you want? If they think it's possible and would be willing to do it then you could either start going to them or tell your hairdresser that there's another hairdresser who will give you the colour you want.

Personally I think I'd switch hairdressers. It's a lot of money to pay if you're not completely happy with the results.

I don't see any orange in your hair, but that could just be my monitor. It looks straight up blonde to me!

If your hairdresser isn't really willing or able to give you exactly what you want, though...maybe it's time you start looking for someone else?

from the photo on my monitor it doesnt look orangey, but i certainly am familiar with what you are talking about!

i'm not sure if they have this where you live, but i use clairol shimmer lights shampoo contitioner (a purple shampoo and conditioner). the purple counteracts against the orange and im really happy with it. another good one i know of is redken pearl conditioner that works against the orange.

i would be honest with her, that you want your hair 'ashier', 'zero orange/yellow tones'. take the pictures of you that you're seeing this in to show her too! hope that helps and good luck with your hair!

I use a toning shampoo and conditioner alrrady and that helps a little. You're right nurise, I want an ashier blonde as apposed to a golden blonde. The first photo shows that its more golden, not so much in the second. In some light it really does look orange, even my brother was commenting on my "ranga" hair lol

I think your hair looks gorgeous, but maybe start looking somewhere else if you don't like it... like you say, you're paying a lot and she doesn't seem to be getting what you're after.

It sounds to me like SHE thinks you're being unrealistic, so I don't think explaining what you want again will help. She's obviously got it into her head that she can't achieve what you're after

Okay, okay.....do you happen to know the brand of colour they are using??? I'm pretty well versed on all professional colours, I could give you a formula to achieve the result you want, which I think would probably be to bring your base to maybe an 8 or 9, cut the gold (which is warm) and add a cool tone of blonde....

I agree, it's time to see another hairdresser, one who will do your hair the way you want it.

Also, regardless of what a stylist's opinion is, it is OUR job to make YOU the client happy...so although WE may not agree, at the end of the day, the decision is YOURS. The only time I will refuse to do what a client wants is if it is going to jeprodize the integrity of the hair

any way if your hairdresser is refusing to do what you want cause they dont like it than it is time to find a new stylist

They use CHI and Elgon colour. My highlights are a gorgoeus blonde, that light "hollywood" blonde I like to call it, now if those bits of my hair can be that light, why can't the rest?

Okay, Chi colour is the easiest to achieve a cool blonde tone....ask her to use "CB BLONDE" (cool blonde) with a 20 - 30 Volume. That should cut the gold and make it a lighter, clearer shade.
Also, there should be no need for toning with Chi colour, all the blonde shades are toner/bleach in one, so im not quite sure why you said they tone the hair a lot after the service

I have no idea either, they use a silver shampoo and conditioner when they wash my hair and then use this stuff, I can't remember what it is called, but it's a foam sort of thing that they put stacks of it onto my hair. It's almost like they're taking short cuts?

I just dont know why they are using toner period. It doesnt make any sense at all. I'm not farmiliar with the other brand you mentioned, elgon? Maybe they are using that in your hair and not chi? I'm also a bit confused as to why they are using a toning shampoo and conditioner in your hair right after the chemical serive...a toning shampoo and conditioner should only be used as a maintenance thing after you've gone home and the hair has had time to fully let the chemical develope. I would probably if I were you, find a salon who uses Matrix colours. They have a line called 'Colorgraphics' which I think is amazing for blonde tones...You could also go with 10AV from Matrix socolour

I don't think there are any salons around that use Matrix, but I'll have a look. I work next door to this hairdresser, so I see them all everyday, so I guess I am a little reluctant to change hairdressers, they'd notice lol

We have apprenticeships for hairdressing in Australia, it's the most common way hairdressers are trained, they go for 4 years, my hairdresser is in her 3rd year, so I don't know if it's just her being scared that she might stuff up, who knows.

It works sort of the same way in Canada, you need to put in 480 hours (if i remember correctly) apprenticing before you get licensed. What about Rusk colour....do you know if anyone uses Rusk colour in Aus?? They have GORGEOUS blondes....SLO1A is a super light ash blonde, probably a level 9-10 depending on the developer used....It could just be that she is unsure of her skill level and is not comfortable branching out, why not suggest a new colour brand you heard of and how you would love it if she could get it to try it out on you...ie. rusk or matrix
