Please list the top three reasons why you'd find a new dermatologist. Thanks in advance for participating!

top three for me...

1. too many patients in the waiting room! standing room only - no way i'm getting personal attention from this dude!

2. didn't ask me anything about the products i was using before he had his script pad out. what about product interaction issues?

3. never touched my skin and even asked my why i was taking my hat off. i thought he might want to see my skin. go figure!

i guess there's a mini rant in there! can you tell? lmao

1.Too many people booked for appointments for the day

2. Not listening to what you have to say.

3. They don't take the time to do a good exam and in rushed mood..

1. He acts like you're being a nuisance when you ask questions.

2. He spends very little time with you before jumping to conclusions about what the problem is.

3. He doesn't listen and ignores the info you provide.

4. He misdiagnoses the problem and sends you away unhelped.

Okay, so I added a fourth. Can you tell I had a very negative experience?

I went to this derm with a painful rash on my eyelids; it was caused quite simply by some cheap eye shadow I had a reaction to. I explained to him exactly what had happened and was hoping he could prescribe some cream to heal it up. He sent me away with NOTHING. Okay, he gave me a "prescription" which told me I could no longer bathe, only take 2-minute showers. This had absolutely nothing to do with the problem.

I moved on to another dermatologist, who listened, understood and prescribed a cream that knocked the rash right out.

Sorry about the rant. Just had to share.

I hate:

1-when a derm does not listen

2-when it takes forever to have an appointment with him

3-when he seems in a rush

I went to see a derm because I had pimples on my forehead that woudnt go away. He looked at me like "that's it? you came here to show me 2 or 3 pimples on your forehead?" Then I showed him the small bumps behind my arms (now i know its called keratosis pilaris and that some creams can help a lot) and he said, you're gonna die with it, there's nothing you can do about it! What an idiot! GRRRr

1. Spends less than 2 minutes with me

2. Over 2 hour wait

3. Has arrogant/ rude demeanor

I was seeing a Male dermatologist in NY, and he was useless! I am going to get a referral from my physician for a female. I just think they understand our skin better, because obviously they are the same sex. Men can be a pain in the Ass!

I've only gone to one derm (and quit a few years ago, I moved away, and my acne seems to be controllable with OTC products now, at least most of the time!) However, he was great -- he did have a lot of patients and was always running an hour late with his appointments, but it was worth the wait! He knew his stuff, and could quickly glance at your face under a bright light and tell you all sorts of stuff about your skin! When I went in for the first time, my brother came too since we both had acne, and the dr. was able to immediately tell us that I had clogged pores (not true acne) due to my very oily skin, while my brother had true acne, and he gave us different medicinces that both worked well! And he was also good about adjusting your medications if one wasn't working as well, and he seemed very knowledgeable about what products you could use together. He also had *tons* of other tips for preventing acne in addition to just using medicine, I have most of them in my notepad if you're interested! I learned a ton about acne prevention just on my first visit!

He also does a great job with my parents, at least once a year they go in for check-ups, and he freezes off any pre-cancerous spots. (There are always quite a few to freeze off, my parents had several sunburns when they were younger.) Again, he can do it very quickly and accurately, my mom is amazed that he can pick out the cancerous spots so quickly out of the tons of freckles on my dad! lol

So while this guy does have a lot of patients and a long wait, it is worth it! If he didn't know what he was doing, I would have found a new one though!

I just switched. My previous derm didn't say a word to me in three visits. Just glanced at the notes the attending nurse took then walked out of the room....when I was getting a mole biopsied, she looked at it, left the room, and came back with a syringe and a scalpel. I had no idea what was going on until the nurse said "please lay on your stomach so the doctor can remove your mole!"

WHAT!

AND her idea of a full-body scan was to flick her eyes up and down in 1 second and nod.

My new derm took 15 full minutes to look at and measure every mark on my body and write it all down. He took another 15 minutes to thoroughly ask me questions about all my skin issues and made sure to answer any questions I had.

1) When the products they keep giving me really aren't helping my skin. So they give me a stronger prescription of the same product and it doesn't help and when I ask about other medications because the ones I'm using aren't working at all they blow me off.

2) When I tell them the medication they are giving me is making me so ill I can't take it because I miss too much school or work while on it. And then they give a variation of the same medication which also makes me ill. (this was an oral medication)

3) When it's been a year, I'm spending over $100 every three months on new medications that does nothing.

And finally because this can't be completed without a number 4...

4) when I use the internet to research acne, switch to a different BC than the one my derm had me on, buy a couple cheapo products, and my skin clears up totally after one month (bacne, chest ance, and face).

Thank you so much for the replies, everyone! I thought, for like a brief moment, that I was being unreasonable. I have an appointment with a new dermatologist on Tuesday. I'm allergic to something. Yayness.

Omfg I went to a derm for my chicken skin. She TOTALLY dismissed my concerns, completely! And I realize that it isnt a huge deal to her but it honestly bothered me and when she had no compassion for that it pissed me off. lol

I can list the three things I sought in my dermatologist and why I like her...

1) asks about what i use on my skin and thinks that having a couple pimples IS a big deal!

2) works closely with an aesthetician.

3) is interested and knowledgable in lasers, chemical peels, botox, and injectibles and other new treatments available for patients.

While I don't need the things required of number 3, I have seen a dermatologist who never listened to me and thought my questions and concerns were silly and laughed them off - which I did not appreciate. My new dermatologist is a woman, and she really listens fills all three of my criteria above. I think woman dermatologists understand a woman's skin concerns and they do say that woman doctors spend more time with their patients than male doctors.

I agree with you about female dermatologists being better with women than male dermatologists,in general. The male derm I went to would always basically brush off my aesthetic concerns about my skin, or else go to extremes and offer me expensive, "cutting-edge" and still unneeded antiaging treatments.Never listened to my exact words or worries. I basically have seen a derm for so long b/c my father has a long, severe history of skin cancer, so I have to get checked for it, but I never felt comfortable being undressed around m y male dermatologist. He never tried to make me feel more comfortable, actually, once, ridiculously(considering why I was there)commented on how pale I was, like that was a bad thing.Of course I'm pale, he tells me to stay out of the sun! He made a comment about the placement of one of my birthmarks once(on my left breast) and that was too much! After years with him,I've left; now I'm actively looking for a female doctor. I just think they're more attentive to smaller, sometimes more psychlogically-tied concerns and issues, overall, than man are.(From my experience with my other doctors, in different fields, most of whom are female.)
