I think it's a combination of so many things like poor eating habits, cleanliness, makeup, and sometimes it's even hereditary, even the enviroment can cause breakouts. :scared:

A little of column A and a little of column B....

but for the most part I'd say false.

I've had many bad reactions from products. I tend to notice even more so now, when a product is the culprit of a breakout cos I think I have perfected my skincare regime. So, everytime I break out, it's always when I use a new product (that my skin doesn't agree with).

Of course bad habits will cause breakouts for me as well...especially when I don't drink enough water or when I indulge in too many bad things.

When I have a breakout it's always hormonal. But I have had certain products cause me to get whiteheads which I never usually get.

false............I take good care of my skin, I never have breakouts...................I tried Olay regenerist serum and the next day I had a pimple...............Yaks!! It's really not for me................

Ugh. I work in skincare & this is something I have to deal with every day. i believe that this woman was referring to acne. Let's clarify things : People use the word "break out" in two totally different ways. Acne breakouts are generally very different than sensitive or allergic reactions. An acne breakout (i.e. pimples, whiteheads, blackheads) can be caused by too emollient products or comedogenic products. It's also caused by bad skincare habits, hormones, medication, diet and lifestyle issues. Note : not all oils are bad for the skin. Please quit drying your skin with harsh cleanser, toning with alcohol based toners, using totally oil free AKA full of wax products and then wondering why you are such an oil slick. Also, quit smoking & tanning.

Sensitive or allergic reactions are often caused by fragrances or dyes in products and are generally characterized by redness, burning, irritation, peeling, and inflammation. Unless it's rosacea or a few other chronic hereditary skin conditions, your redness and irritation is most definitely caused by a product.

products can cause breakouts too, just like they cause rashes if you're not suitable.. but bad habits is also another reason..

I am really good at sticking to my skin care regimen, but I still breakout down the sides of my face. Which I have found is from using my cell phone, because when I am good about using my headset it clears up. Although, I did try using the Smashbox Photo Finish and their new light foundation recently and had one come up on my chin and one on my nose. I stopped using it (and went back to Youngblood mineral MU) and no problems since (outside of the areas mentioned prior from my cell phone usage).

So I guess, for me, I agree that "bad habits" cause breakouts.

P.S. :rockwoot: This is my first post on this forum!

Hmm. This is a good thread. I wonder about this myself. I think that certain products can make your skin act up if they aren't used to them. I haven't had this happen to me, but how could so many women complaining of this be wrong? I think bad habits can definitely contribute to acne in the sense of using dirty make-up brushes and letting your unwashed hair rub against your face, stuff like that. My Aunt is a nurse and she said that while certain things can agitate it, it's mostly genetic. For me, acne has always been hormonal.

I use a TON of products and I never break out (period time not counting lol), but my bf smokes weed and eats a lot junk food and he constantly breaks out!

Hello, the customer is always right. Haha. Just kidding! I had to. But really I think a great product can make someone break out when used in the wrong way.

I can only wear mineral foundation. Anything else gives me acne. It's part of my genes and Ive been suffering from it since I was 14. I get breakouts during the time of the month.

It saddens me that myths like 'lack of cleanliness' are still alive and well.

Must agree with those that voted it's a combination of factors that cause breakouts. :) We're all unique and that includes our skin care needs.

I have to agree. People usually don't reach for a prouct unless there is a problem. Therefore, the product may have just excerberated the problem, which was probably initially caused by bad habits.

I would say False; some people have reactions to certain ingredients in products no matter how well they take care of their skin. For example, I am allergic to aspirin and salicylic acid (aspirin being a derivative of salicylic acid) so I can't use anything that contains salicylic acid. I once used a foundation without checking the list of ingredients and after applying the foundation, my skin broke out in a rash. I checked the ingredients and found out that salicylic acid was listed. After that incident, I now always check the ingredients on a makeup product before I buy it.

While bad habits can certainly cause breakouts (as others have mentioned), I do think products alone can also cause breakouts. Why else would my dermatologist give me a long list of what makeup and hair products were safe for my oily skin and which ones would clog my pores? I don't think I have any bad skin habits (with the exception of perhaps not having the best diet) since I am pretty rigorous about my skincare routine, but there are still products that can cause me to break out while other products don't!
