Hi, i had a question about not washing hair. I've searched but i didn't find anything. I've been so addicted to the hair forum, and i've learned soo much.

Anyway the real question. Ever since i had a hair disaster i don't wash my hair everyday (now its healthy). Is there any bad consequences to not washing my hair everyday. I always fear i'm gonna end up getting lice or some other weird hair creatures or maybe even dandruff. I know i don't go THAT long without washing my hair for it to happen but can that happen? or how bad would you have to be to get something like that?

you are not meant to wash your hair every day, its not good for the hair, as it dries it out. how often do you wash it now? i am guessing in order to get lice you'd have to not wash it for like months and live on the street in unhygenic environtments etc, so im sure ure ok. you can also get lice from other people though, no matter how often you wash your hair, so i guess its not really a sign of dirtyness. kids get them alot for some reason. i wash mine about twice a week.

oh o.k. thats what i thought, i wash my hair at least twice a week also so i guess i am o.k. just sometimes i get paranoid about it, since before my hair disaster i was washing it everyday.

I wash mine every other day unless I get sick, then I go way too long, lol. I used to wash mine every day but it was like straw. But if I skipped a day, it was so oily. I use a gentler shampoo now and my hair isnt oily when I skip and I dont have as many split ends or dryness.

I think you should continue to do whatever you're doing now since that's how your hair became healthy. As far as I know dandruff is a scalp condition that you can get whether you wash your hair daily or not.

Right now I wash my hair about every 3-4 days and that works well for me.

Well i would color my hair blue black all the time, then i tried to go lighter and i bleached it at home, didn't come out right so i colored it dark again, then i bleached it again and then i went dark again. finally i bleached it again and it was a disaster AGAIN. (this happend in less than a month). Anyway my hair was just fried and it was super short on some parts (like half and inch) and super long on others it was super straw like so i cut it ALL off like a BOY!!!! i know it was my fault for bleaching and coloring it dark so many times, but i was younger and really had no clue what i was doing, now im older and after that experience i research everything.

I only wash my hair about every 3-4 days. I have found that it seems to be less oily since I have been washing it less often. As far a lice go, I have heard that lice actually like clean hair better than dirty hair (that probably explains the olive oil treatments for lice) so I wouldn't lose too much sleep over that, unless you work with children, because for some reason they seem to love to give us things like head lice and colds. hehe

I know its healthy now cause when i go to the salon the stylist dosent complain about my hair anymore before it was like "OH MY GOD WHAT DID YOU DO TO YOUR HAIR?!"

I agree with the others, you´re not supposed to wash it everyday - that is not good for your hair or scalp.

And yes lice likes clean hair better and has nothing to do with unsanitarity, they spread between people when we are close and share hats and combes etc.

I think about the 40s you where supposed to not wash it more often than 14 days, or you could get oily hair and get sick.

I didn't know lice like clean hair better. I always thought it was dirty hair that had something to do with it. I was my hair about every other day and sometimes every 2 days. My hairstylist said that if the roots get oily you can use baby powder. It works for me because I have light hair and you can't see the powder. I know some hair care product companies offer hair powders now too.

Every other day or 3rd day is fine, as long as you don't get oily... but that's your personal choice. You can get dandruff and lice no matter how clean your hair is...

It's good to let some oil build up.... it keeps the hair healthy and shiny. If it's too much, you may need a clarifying shampoo, but other than people knowing that you haven't washed your hair... it's generally not harmful. Just dont go weeks - lol :icon_eek:

when u guys say u wash ure hair twice a week does that mean u shampoo ure hair twice a week? i dont wash my hair every day, i wash it every other day, but i do rinse it and condition it everyday because my hair is curly and to detangle it it has to be wet.

I wash my hair 3 times a week. I used to wash and blowdry it everyday. Now since I've stopped blowdrying it and only wash 3 times a week, it is much healthier.

I wash every other day too. It's too inconvenient and not good for your hair to wash every single day.

What shampoo can you use to make your hair less oily on the second or third day of no washing?

It really depends on how much oil your scalp produces... there really isn't one product for everyone. But you don't want one that is too creamy (like Pantene) because it has too much waxy buildup, and you also don't want something too strong because it will strip all the oil and your oil glands will produce more to compensate. Use something that is gentle, yet effective for your hair type. I like HealthySexyHair Soy Milk shampoo & conditioner. It leaves my hair soft, but not weighed down.

I can't afford not to wash my hair everyday. It will turn into an oil slick on day 2. What alternatives do I have? Shampoo every other day and just condition on those days when I don't shampoo?
