i dont like tanning salons just cuz your literally laying right on to the rays lol. does that make sense?? i tan outside. i use an spf 30 sport sunblock and then a tanning oil on top. it probably bring the sun block down to a spf 25 but its better than what i normally do because i used to spend hours in the sun with nothing. but getting a base tan i think is fine then use a self tanner. there are really good self tanners out there. you should try neutragena self tan foam thats brown when it comes out and you can see where your applying it. i think they even have one that will make you 3 shades darker in one application.

If you like tan beds and tanning in the sun,

you should protect your skin before and after tan

very well. In my opinion everything is good if you use it

in moderation .

I can't believe with all the information out there that people would still choose to tan, especially in the tanning beds. And frankly, I am shocked that a doctor told one of the posters that it was ok as long as she didn't overdo it. Doctors can be idiots too, you know. Anyone can go to school for 8 yrs, get all C's and still become a doctor.

Tanning is a sign of damage, some people can do alot before it shows up as cancer and wrinkles and sagging skin and some people can get very little sun and it will be a problem. There is no such thing as a safe tan, unless it comes out of the bottle. We as women have to stop buying into the beauty ideals thrown on us by the "industry". Am I the only one who sees the hypocrisy of a tan model on the magazine cover and an article on skin cancer on page 50?

Like the one poster said, I would rather have smooth white skin as far as possible into my middle and old age than have leathery destroyed skin... deformed when doctors have to start cutting big chunks out of it because the cancer went so deep. And really, does a brown orangy face look all that attractive? Maybe the person getting the tan thinks so, but from some other people's point of view, it kind of looks the same as someone puffing on a cigarette. Stupid.

Oh, Battygirl, I just read this thread and I know that some of the posts may come across as a little harsh, but everyone means well. They're just warning you about the long-term effects of this tanning. I agree with you, I think I look better when I am a bit tan, but in the end, it's not really worth it. Besides, I've seen your pictures and you have lovely skin! Avoiding tanning will only keep it that way longer.

And this is a bit off-topic, but I think it's a bit far to say that anyone can go to school for 8 years and become a doctor. Med schools won't even look at you if you don't have a certain GPA. I mean, I understand your point, that doctors don't know everything, but I guess it touched a spot 'cause I'm on the track for med school.

Dont be offended by anything that I have said....you know you are one of my buddies

I agree, I think that comment was a little unfair. Not just anyone can be a doctor. And it's certainly not easy. I'm not a doctor, but I do have respect for them.
Personally, I don't mind being pale.

I like that look on me. I'm at high risk for skin cancer (and have had three moles removed to test for skin cancer in the past). Luckily I haven't gotten cancer, but I don't care to get it, either! lol.

And, Battygurl...I'm sure you'll be fine.

Just be careful, ok?

lol.. ok guys i think she gets the point about the harmful effects of the sun.

a lil bit of sun isnt bad as long as its done in moderation.

as far as the doctor comment, they make mistakes ALL the time, there not perfect

they tell there patients dont do this but they do that..lol.. like smoke cigars
