does anyone have any tips on growing thick/coarse african american hair. my hair is somewhat hard to straigthen and it breaks off pretty easily.

Its hard to help because I don't have that type of hair, so I can't really talk from experience.... but I would try keeping it hydrated and conditioned. You can also try supplements like Biotin.

Are your trying to grow your hair out from a relaxer? If so, I would suggest getting it braided as to maintain a nice hairstyle while your hair is in between textures. In my expereince, getting my hair braided has grown ny hair out tremendously. I know a lot of people say it can cause your hair to break--but I believe that happens from poor maintenance.

If you are simply trying to make you hair grow longer, I would suggest deep condtioning with a cholesterol/olive oil/mayonaisse type conditioner. You can purchase these at many beauty supply stores or simply use the ingredients themselves (mayo and an egg beaten together or extra virgin olive as a hot oil treatment) for optimum results. Depending on your hair type, I would suggest at least once a week treatment with these and your will definitely see less breakage.

Keep your hair hyrdated with a light hair lotion such as Pink Oil Mosturizer (available at drug stores {pink and black bottle}) and avoid curling irons as much as possible.

Hope this helps!

some good products to use would be Organic root stimulator hair mayonnaise(sorry about the spelling) and the ORS root uplifting shampoo. Use the hair mayo like once every two weeks. oh and make sure u oil ur scalp at least 1-3 times a week depending of what oil u use. oh and keep ur ends moisturized as well.

Yup I have heard great things about ORS mayoniease, DPR-111 hair conditoner, CPR, Lurkasilk Clestrol with aloe vera. Also use oil and deep condtion once a week. Don't wash your hair more than 2 times a week. Don't use too much proteins it will make your hair break off easily. I have heard Creme of Nature Shampoo (green label, yellow tab) the detanglining fomrmula is the best. Also a lot of people are using NExxus, Aplogee, Keratese as for shampoo & condtioner. Also on this site - they tell you- to comb your hair & put into large braids-and then shampoo your hair while it is in braids- and then lossen each braid one by one- and condtion (less breakage & detanglong).

The longhaircareforum forum has tons of info on growing your hair out long and healthy specifically aimed at black Americans. You do have to pay to post questions there though.

In order for my hair to start growing out and get healthier, I had to quit using the flat irons, blow driers, curling irons, etc., as well as quit coloring my hair. As soon as I did that, it started growing A LOT more and A LOT faster! TRESemme and Garnier Fructis have worked wonders, as well as K-PAK.

Helped your hair to grow, or just keep it from breaking off??? Could you list the exact products you use of each of these brands please. Thanks a bunch

I have the same type & length of hair, and I totally agree with Aquilah's advice. I would advise the following:

1. Don't use heat on your hair more than once a week.

If at all possible not at all. I went over a year without flat ironing my hair. I know how to wrap my hair so it comes out quite straight.

2. Find good products and stick with them.

I found good products that work for my hair and I have stuck to them. I've been using the same for almost 2 years. I use almost everything Organic Root Stimulator perm, oil sheen, wrap lotion, moisturizer, and conditioner. The other wrap lotion I use is Lottabody's Wrap'n & Tap'n.(I dilute it first.) CuTeLiCiOuS metioned C of Nature shampoo. This is also the only shampoo I used outside of when I get a perm. I can totally comb out my hair and only have a few hairs in the comb before I start wrapping.

3: Don't blow dry, wrap & sit under a dryer.

I always wrap my hair after a shampoo. I only wear my hair straight so this works perfectly 4 me. I don't even have to use a flat iron to get get the straight look you have in you pic.

4:Tie your hair up @ night It's critical to wrap & tie your hair up @night (with a satin/silk scarf), or at least wrap your hair up and sleep on satin pillowcase.

5. Use a cholesterol conditioner every 2 weeks.

I like Silk Elements Mega Cholesterol Cond't @ Sally's.

Your hair looks great. If it's all yours you may not need this advice. If it ain't broke don't fix it.

I agree with the prior advice of limiting heat and loading up on moisturising products, while growing your hair out. Don't forget a daily scalp massage to free up natural oils.

I just sleep with a silk bag-type thing on my head, and it works better that wrapping did for me.
