Hi all! I am so sick of my dark black hair!!! My hair is super fine too, so it has no volume at all right now.

I just tried L'oreal True Brunettes in ultra light ash brown and it didn't do anything but put very slight reddish brown tones in it under direct sunlight. Indoors, nothing changed.

Does anyone know of a way I could get a dark to medium brown color without bleaching it? I was thinking of getting a blonde haircolor (with my natural black base) to get a brownish shade. Would this work? I tried it before but I forgot what kinda results I got. Please help!!! Any advice is appreciated!

If your hair is dyed black there is nothing that will work except bleaching it at a professional salon, cause if you do it on your own, might not turn out very well, unless you know how to do it propperly.

I have natural black hair and what i used to do to get a light brown shade on my hair was buy the blondest dye i could find and dye my hair, at first it wont give you the color that you expect but you have to keep doing it and eventually you will get the shade that you want, i;ll post a picture of how my hair color used to look like before dying it back to black so you can see

Thanks for the link, Ash!

Actually I didn't really dye it black...LOL...it's my natural haircolor.

I did dye over the brown I used to have with a dark brown shade. I stayed away from black dye because I've heard so many horror stories about it. To top it all off, I chopped off all my hair recently, and it's now a very short A-line bob. I'm still getting used to it, but the color is really bothering me because it just makes the haircut so flat! ...so sad...

I don't want to be blonde (me being asian it doesn't look natural IMHO although I did have blonde hair before...eek!!)...just like a brownish shade...

I have natural black hair and the only way for me to change the entire color of my hair is to have it lifted by a professional. Everytime I have ever tried doing my own hair-always the same thing- orange brassy hair.

if you are adamant about doing it yourself, don't do an all-over single process color- think about doing highlights instead.

Ooh! Pics would be great, Nury!

So get the blondest dye and keep doing it til it's light enough...
I have an extra bottle of the L'oreal Les True Brunettes which is supposed to lighten dark hair up to 3 shades lighter...I was thinking if I should try using it again to see if lightens my hair some more, but I'm thinking if it didn't lighten it the first time it wouldn't do much the second time since my hair's still pretty much black. Ugh, I don't know...

I know what you mean about the brassiness!!! I look at past pictures of myself and it didn't look very natural either...Sadly, I can't afford getting my hair done right now...I would love highlights too...When I used to get it done it seemed really low maintainance because I didn't have to deal with dark roots!

I know about the orangey-ness too. I've always wanted a medium brown, but I don't think I can get that unless I bleach my hair and then dye it brown or something. I've gotten my hair professionally done too, and it looks exactly the same as doing it myself.

I always end up with a reddish orangey brown, but it's grown on me.

Here's a pic of my hair, using the lightest ash blonde:

No worries, Ash!

So here are some pics of my desired shade...the second one is the lightest I would go.

EDIT: not the pic in the middle...LOL... Just Eva's and JLo's.

at home highlighting kits- I like Revlon Custom Effects Highlights and Loreal Feria Highlights

Ohh!!! That's such a pretty color, Ash! I wouldn't mind getting mine that shade! I was actually thinking that if I don't get my hair "brown" I'd take a dark red shade or reddish brown if I could. This shade is so pretty on you! Do you remember what brand light ash blonde you used?

Ash, that's a gorgeous hair colour!

LaC, good luck with the hair dying, seems like you've been given some great advice! I have to admit I came in just to see what the ladies would suggest since I might want to lighten mine too

Thanks! Good luck to you too...I'd love to see some pics if you do decide to lighten yours!

Thanks Rosie!

Liz - when you do, don't get freaked out by the sample hair thing...the sample for light ash blonde is super light with a greenish tint.

Thanks for the advice, everyone!

Okay, now I'm undecided...

Ash, your reddish brown hair is making me want to go red instead of brown! LOL...I'm thinking something like burgundy red or just a tad redder than Ashley's in the pic...

What do you guys think? Red or brown, and if red, how would I achieve this? I'm guessing, get the most intense bright red I can find and hope it comes out burgundy red?

Any advice you could give me would be very much appreciated!!! TIA!

Something like these:

I'm leaning more towards the pic on the right...see how it's a tad redder than Ashley's?

Let me know what you guys think! Brown or red? Also, how do I achieve it?

I didn't know Revlon had a similar product. I gotta check that out at the drugstore....
