I have quite a few questions regarding hair care, especially conditioners. I've been reading about conditioners and I'm like :icon_scratch:

What is the difference between deep conditioners, conditioners and leave-in conditioners (appart from the obvious) in the sense which are better?

Do you apply conditioner on your whole hair or just the ends; and what about deep conditioner? (I put deep conditioner on my whole hair and the other one just on the ends)

Do you have to use a regular conditioner after the deep conditioning treatment?

Is it ok if I use deep conditioner once a week and just the regular conditioner after every washing? I wash my hair about 2 or 3 times a week.

Is it ok to leave deep conditioning threatment on for a longer period of time - an hour or even longer, even thought it says 15 minutes or so on the product?

I noticed that some conditioners have proteins in them. Are proteins good for your hair and in what sense?

That is it for now. As you can see I'm getting a little obssesive about my hair lol

What is the difference between deep conditioners, conditioners and leave-in conditioners (appart from the obvious) in the sense which are better? Deep conditioners are usually NOT used everyday. They are very thick and help hydrate overly dry hair. Daily conditioners lighty coat hair to smoothen & soften, and leave-in conditioners are to help detangle, soften and keep hair from drying out from heat.

Do you apply conditioner on your whole hair or just the ends; and what about deep conditioner? (I put deep conditioner on my whole hair and the other one just on the ends) I use conditioner on the ends... Whatever would be hanging out of the back if I made a ponytail. I don't put it near the roots. The hair at the root is newer hair, and doesn't really need condtioner. (Same with deep conditioners)

Do you have to use a regular conditioner after the deep conditioning treatment? No... usually the deep conditioners are more than enough. Usually any more will just weigh it down.

Is it ok if I use deep conditioner once a week and just the regular conditioner after every washing? I wash my hair about 2 or 3 times a week. Yep... thats fine.

Is it ok to leave deep conditioning threatment on for a longer period of time - an hour or even longer, even thought it says 15 minutes or so on the product? You can leave it on longer. They suggest a certain amount of time, because usually after that period, it stops 'working' and can sometimes be difficult to remove. If you want to keep it on longer... heat it up w/ a hair dryer to let the cuticle open up to absorb it more, and be sure to rinse it out well.

I noticed that some conditioners have proteins in them. Are proteins good for your hair and in what sense? They're good, as they help strengthen hair. BUT, you don't want to overuse protein on the hair because too much can actually dry it out. So, once or twice a month is ok.

That is it for now. As you can see I'm getting a little obssesive about my hair lol

Your doing a great job janelle....my hairs ten time better than it was last year.

Bump! I have a conditioner confusion question too....

Do you usually use a leave-in conditioner in addition to a regular conditioner (that you would rinse out)??

My hair is fairly fine, and needs to be washed almost daily due to oil (but I've been trying to stretch it out to every other day). Would a leave-in conditioner weigh my hair down too much?

Thanks!

I agree with the great answers but I have a few thoughts to consider.

If you have thick, coarse, damaged hair like me, apply conditioner on hair a few inches from scalp to ends. Comb through. Rince with warm, then cool water.

I wash my hair every 3-4 days and I always use the same deep conditioner.

Conditioners with protein are a waste of money because hair can't absorb protein so it

gets washed out of the hair.

I think different products for the same purpose are gimmicky and companies make millions at our indecisiveness.

What I do with deep conditioner, I use it a few times a month, and I put a shower cap on and a towel over that. It makes the heat from my scalp make the conditioner work better. I leave it on 30 minutes to an hour.
