Hello,

I have reddish brown hair and want to color it blonde at home. I went and bought hair color and did it but it did not get as light as I want it and it still is more of a reddish color. I bought an extra light natural blonde.

What shade should I use to avoid the red tone and is there a brand of hair color that is best for this. Thanks for the help. I know that I wont accomplish being a platinum blonde but I would like to be a light to medium blonde color if possible. Thanks for the help.

Teri

You may do a two-step process for light blonde hair. With your natural starting color, you have no choice but to use a separate "Ash" or "Blue" toner to get the best results. You could try the one-step box color kit again, but I can guarantee that it will not be as predictible as the two-step "bleach and tone" process.

Perhaps Janelle (MuT's hair guru) will be able to help you out with an exact technique.

I have always been told that if you are going to dye darker or lighter in a different color family, that you should go to a professional!

Honestly, for the first time, I'd go to the salon so your color is even. But if you are doing it at home, most beauty supplies will sell an additive that will help neutralize red. You also have to make sure you're using the correct volume peroxide as well as the right processing time, as brown hair must pass through the red stage before you'll get blonde.
