My hairdresser told me to keep my color lasting to use a shampoo for colored hair. my hairdresser is just a local one I always use and have no problems.

My friend uses a top salon in town and they told her that color shampoo's etc dont work, they are just the same as normal shampoo's and aint worth buying..

Anyone know any truth to this?

I use Tresemme shampoo and conditioner for coloured hair along with a colour lock leave-in conditioning spray and my colour has lasted a lot longer than when I have coloured it using the same dye but not used these products. I think the colour lock spray is what does most of the work though. In the past I've used John Freida shampoo for coloured brunette hair which I must admit didn't seem to do much for me.

I think coloured shampoos definatley work. I've been dying my hair red for over a year now and in the past I haven't really bothered too much with looking after my colour as much as I should have. I used a coloured shampoo maybe once a week then a normal shampoo the rest of the time and I didn't bother with hair treatments or leave in conditioners and my hair was fading so quickly and just looked bad. The last time I went to have my hair dyed I decided I was gunna use colour shampoo and leave in treatments for coloured hair all the time and the difference is amazing. My colour hasn't faded one bit, in fact people keep telling me it's getting more vibrant.

I think it's also worth using coloured shampoos because dying your hair dries it out and coloured shampoos are designed to give it more moisture back.

The following is a snippet from the Beauty Brains:

Water is the Biggest Cause of Fading Hair Colour

Ammonium laureth sulfate is a detergent commonly used in both salon and store brand shampoos. You might even find it in some body washes.

It will remove color from your hair about the same amount as other shampoo detergents such as Ammonium lauryl sulfate, Sodium lauryl sulfate and Sodium laureth sulfate.

Even baby shampoo detergents like PEG 80 Sorbitan Laurate or Cocamidopropyl Betaine will strip color from hair.

But even worse than these detergents is water. In fact, if you just soaked your head in pure spring water, much of your artificial color will be drawn right out of your hair.

If you want to protect your hair color from fading, reduce the number of times that you wash it. And reduce the length of time you rinse by using less shampoo while washing.

Thanks for that info!
